Is there a sense of diminishing returns eventually, as the genre is endlessly remixed and sampled? Will horror eat itself? Not yet, says The Draft! -- or at the very least, it will make the act of autophagia a highly entertaining one.

What I see as the film’s strongest suit, however, is Fuadi’s evident love for the genre. The Draft! sees the director critiquing and celebrating horror’s quirks and stereotypes in equal measure.

While the meta-concept of placing characters in a film that’s still being written doesn’t feel as fresh as it could’ve, the film takes a well-worn setup and infuses it with a self-aware, chaotic, and absurdist energy that works well with the fluid script.
