Audience Member I found this film a really potent vision of the experience of fear and insecurity in contemporary life, driven by a suspenseful plot and a fantastic performance by José Luis García Pérez as Carlos. A confluence of anxious indecision, emasculation, and the shadow of violent crime, all work to reduce Carlos to paranoid desperation. The titular ‘country of fear' refers to a paediatric psychology test to understand child anxiety, but the film's dark and sometimes deeply-unsettling atmosphere reveals contemporary Spain itself as the country of fear. Carlos's turn away from his progressive beliefs and faith in the legitimate authorities, towards prejudice, fear, and a solution to his problem which lies in brute force seems to symbolise the turn to far-right parties which has occurred in many parts of Europe as the financial crisis and spending cuts eats away at public services. In the end, though, El País del Miedo shows us that such a ‘solution' is very much a double-edged sword. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Read all reviews
