Rated 2.5/5 Stars •  Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/24/23 Full Review Galen B Add this to the list of horrors Ronald Reagan has wrought on the world, as were it not for his deregulations that allowed networks to air toy commercials that masquerade as actual shows, CBS would have been legally barred from thrusting this monstrosity into our homes. The best thing about this "special" is that it's not slick enough to hide the crass marketing that is this show's sole reason for existing, so it's a bit of an interesting glimpse behind the curtain for how consent is manufactured. Everything serves the idea that buying an elf on the shelf will trick kids who have outgrown the Santa Claus story back into believing their parents' lies. There's a "climactic" scene where the elf, Chippey, is talking to Santa about how he failed to trick this kid into believing in Santa again, and Santa tells him "it's cool, you don't have the power to control that. Oh, btw I just got a letter from that kid where he now believes in Christmas again because of you." I detest this show with every last fiber of my being.
