Guy Lodge Variety Both sprawling in its narrative reach and sophisticated in its technical execution, it's the filmmakers' most ambitious collective effort to date, hinting at an aptitude for more grand-scale mainstream fare. L L By the time I'd watched half of this film, thinking it was based on a true story, (advertised as based on true events) I thought it unlikely to be true as it wasn't credible. I Googled Higinio Blanco and found nothing and wikipedia did not mention it was based on a true story and so I gave up watching it... Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 12/24/22 Full Review Late R Impressively filmed and wonderfully acted (both Antonio de la Torre and Belen Cuesta do great work, but it's the latter that steals the show with her captivating performance), this is the story of a man forced into a self-made prison with no end in sight; more than that though, it's about how the isolation not only changes him and his role in the world, but those around him, pitting love, persistence and hope against fear, paranoia and oppression in Franco's fascist Spain. The nature of the story requires a delicate hand and the directing team behind this are more than up to the task, getting the balance right with dramatic, weighty scenes interspersed with thrilling, incredibly tense moments. It's an oppressive, suffocating film in more ways than one and often depressing, but there is a distinct air of resilience and determination that offers hope in a dire and desperate situation. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/06/21 Full Review Audience Member Una excelente película española; la trama es muy tensa y las actuaciones son excelentes. ¡TOTALMENTE RECOMENDADA! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member Aside from the film's compelling historical context -- that of the aftermath of the Spanish civil war -- its main character's challenge is nothing short of gripping. How to remain a head of a family, how to be strong for the people that depend on you while confined to living in hiding, in literally a hole in the wall? How can you be a good husband and a father when every knock on the door sends you into a panic? This is a story of how a human being can adopt to even the toughest of the circumstances, and it may give hope to those of us dealing with life's difficulties that there may be light even at the end of the tunnel that we are in. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review georgan g Historical fiction at its best. Watching the 33-year life of a "mole and his family will hold your attention. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member A must see for a Mijas resident. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Read all reviews
