In this film adaptation of a Channing Pollock play, Pauli Arndt (Lillian Gish) marries Carl Behrend (Ralph Forbes), who is soon called off to fight in World War I. Life is difficult on the home front in his absence -- Pauli soon finds that she's pregnant, and her pacifist father (Frank Currier) loses his job due to his beliefs. As the family descends into poverty, Pauli becomes a prostitute to keep her child alive, while her husband is nowhere to be found on the front lines.
