Mick LaSalle San Francisco Chronicle Some will feel privileged to see human drama and an aspect of life not often seen on the movie screen. Others will feel haunted by it and wish they never saw it. For sure, few will leave the film unaffected. Rated: 3/4 Aug 14, 2009 Full Review Betsy Sharkey Los Angeles Times Like Marsh, the filmmaker has taken a sort of triage approach to telling the tale, with near-perfect pacing as he moves between Marsh, the patients, and Marsh's wonderful Ukrainian colleague, neurosurgeon Igor Kurilets. Rated: 4/5 Jul 31, 2009 Full Review David Edelstein New York Magazine/Vulture [A] superb documentary. Jul 27, 2009 Full Review David Harris Spectrum Culture Using a haunting score by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, The English Surgeon keenly shows us Marsh's battle with humility, and allows us to share with him the triumphs of his successes and sorrow of his failures. Rated: 4/5 Oct 3, 2019 Full Review Avi Offer NYC Movie Guru A provocative, taut and compelling documentary that's concurrently disturbing and profoundly moving. Rated: 8.5/10 Jul 25, 2009 Full Review National Post Rated: 4/4 Jul 24, 2009 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member "Gulp", "Oh No", "WTF", "How is that guy smiling?", "I take my hat off dear sir" are things I repeatedly said throughout this stark documentary on the prevails of a surgeon with a heart bigger than london itself. Please note that you may have to hide behind your hands (like I did) when watching the brain tumour removal scene! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member The operating scenes are enough to make you pray every day you never need to have that type of surgery. A devastating yet also optimistic documentary that makes you believe one person can truly make a difference in the world. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Wow, this was an intense look into horrible healthcare in Ukraine and an amazing surgeon who helped many people there. Glad my grandparents didn't stay there. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member "Life is cruel" and this film is a masterpiece. It explores the extent and the limits of the human condition, without leaving a garden path outside the gates at the end. It takes about 10 minutes to forget you are watching a documentary film and much longer to forget some of Dr Smith's patients. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Read all reviews
