The location is perfect, the atmosphere is eerie and the cinematography and colour palette are outstanding. But sitting through 80 minutes of incredibly slow burn will only ensure that the final reveal will find you drained of energy and any interest. It's a smart and wannabe emotional reveal, but by the time you get there, you won't be feeling much. Sorry, good intentions, bad execution. Tilda Swinton was once again fantastic in a dual role but the movie itself was snooze fest. I am sure a lot of this went over my head, but what was the purpose of Bill? How was he able to talk to the Mom in the one scene in the sitting room? Or was he talking to the daughter who thought she was the Mom? It seemed plain to me that the daughter was hallucinating(?) or communing with a spirit so that doesnt make sense she thought she was the Mom. Anyways, good acting, great cinematography, boring plot Rated 3/5 Stars •  Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/24/24 Full Review Cynthia S The ageless endeavor of the child to fix what is perceived to have been broken in life as ordained by memory but irretrievable in death. I suspect from the one star reviews that a lot of reviewers have difficulty dealing with death grief and loss..at least within the context of cinematic art, or possibly find dark spaces more clearly defined by the presence of chainsaws. This is not a horror story but rather a sweet and “haunting” treatise on the panoply of emotions brought to consciousness with the death of a parent: guilt, sadness, anger and the acceptance of the reality that we did not nor could not satisfy our parents completely in life as is the child’s eternal wish. Beautifully acted and filmed in a gothic setting .. the backdrop of a horror film.. but no horror … merely a dreamscape of regret, love and the desire to get it right.. to explain to the departed who we are and how hard we tried to love them , please them and get it right ..
