Jessica Kiang Variety The focus on a rather blank, unsympathetic lead character means its heart is hollow. Feb 20, 2018 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member Absolutely stunning film that tells a thrilling story about the survival of Jussi Ketola in the midst of the Soviet Union and Stalin's evil (demonic) purge on all the hardworking Americans who moved to the Soviet Union in search of a better life. This film tells a story that is gut wrenching and yet hardly spoken of in these modern times. On top of all that the acting is great, the settings and props used for 1930s Karelia are awesome, and the film keeps you on the edge of your seat literally the whole time! I highly recommend you to watch this film and to take away from It what the power of ideology and "building a utopia" type of thinking can lead to, hint it's 60 million people dying. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Heavy stuff. I would recommend this movie to everyone with Finnish background. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member I think the only "official" critic review missed something... Finns overall are rather muted in their expressions when compared to the "Hollywood" style of acting. What it translates to is a review that is in some ways tone and culture deaf. Of course, yes, there was a lot that I myself would have changed in the movie (especially story, directing and cinematography wise) but what it does not detract from is the story of deceit, duplicity, oppression and murder that was the totalitarian and utterly paranoid Soviet Union for the people that flocked there looking for a real socialist workers revolution. What they encountered was quite something else and this is something that the film manages to portray in a fairly unvarnished manner. It might not be tugging at your heart strings in the conventional manner and yes, the film has its failures but to give it a flat out 1/5 is just wrong. Give it a chance if you can.
