Three soldiers on leave from boot camp journey to New York. One of them, Quizz West (William Eythe), meets and falls in love with a local girl, Janet Feller (Anne Baxter), promising to write to her every day. West's unit is shipped out to the Philippines shortly before Pearl Harbor is bombed. Engaged in warfare against the Japanese, West's platoon must also battle the deadly malaria infecting the island.
