There is no sweetness or sentimentality here, and the Little Tramp trying to get rid of one of his rivals for the love of a girl by smashing him over the head with a mallet is not funny. Believe it or not, this is one of the more violent of Chaplin's early shorts, but its creativity staging the fights and its amusing ending keep it from utter mediocrity.
