In Vienna, the happily complacent middle-class Pointer family -- John (Lionel Atwill), Carola (Verree Teasdale) and their daughter, Mariette (Anita Louise) -- comes up against a new tenant: suave, vain actor Herman Brandt (Ricardo Cortez). Shocked by Brandt's blatant romantic advances toward her, Carola demands the apartment manager evict him, but Brandt declines to move. When Brandt is discovered shot dead soon after, the Pointers and their servants come under police suspicion.
