Audience Member Richard Harrison plays Marco Polo, not an Mongolian but an explorer who becomes the Khan's Royal Inspector. When Han rebel assassins storm the palace and are defeated by the Khan's fierce bodyguards (Johnny Wang as a grappler, Gordon Liu as a dual blade user, and Leung Kar Yan as a user of Iron Palm). Marco Polo and his men are actually the villains as this tale unfold, and they track Carter Wong to his hideout, kill him and his kid brother, and kidnap his wife. Then Carter Wong's sworn brothers rescue the wife, and must train with her father before the enemies track them down. The movie has cool montages of training, and features a heroic bloodshed type ending with a fierce 20-30 minute finale. Its great to see such a stellar cast with athleticism and finesse facing each other, and the story is great with Marco Polo's sympathy during the more pivotal acting scenes. Because of the narrative heft, Marco Polo is one of the better Han vs Tartar stories from the Shaw Brothers library. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Audience Member So, explorer Marco Polo travels all across the Mongolian Empire and shares his findings with Kublai Khan, who then appoints him an imperial inspector assigned with finding a group of rebels who just tried to assassinate Kublai. Yes I'm sure this is all historically accurate. There are four men left to be found, most prominently my main man Fu Sheng, who go into hiding to work on their kung fu skills. Polo himself isn't a complete d-bag and eventually sees the value in the rebel cause. Despite some strangeness in the vibe of the movie and not having any idea what they were going for, things clear up with a half hour left in time for a great action finale. Always keep your faith in director Chang Cheh. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Read all reviews
