Jennie Yabroff Newsweek Low concept, maybe, but still something to talk about at your next dinner party. Feb 8, 2018 Full Review Tirdad Derakhshani Philadelphia Inquirer A not too funny, not too sad, largely improvised dramedy about two nice people who both succumb to the seven-year-itch and live to regret it. Rated: 2.5/4 Nov 11, 2010 Full Review Mick LaSalle San Francisco Chronicle Aselton gets a lot said in 78 minutes. I think the main thing she says is something never overtly spoken, that life is essentially a lonely experience - even when we're surrounded by activity, and even if we never shut up. Rated: 3/4 Oct 28, 2010 Full Review Rene Jordan El Nuevo Herald (Miami) In The Freebie, the lovers go from hypothetical to pathetic. [Full review in Spanish] Jul 14, 2022 Full Review Brian Orndorf BrianOrndorf.com Aselton proves herself to be a formidable filmmaker with a keen eye for shame, making the picture something of a surprise, especially with its sense of marital realism. Rated: B Jan 11, 2011 Full Review Rene Rodriguez Miami Herald A sly examination of the fragility of love. Rated: 3/4 Dec 29, 2010 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member It's well acted, but it turns out to be just another film about a boring, straight, white, monogamous married couple. It presents a message that is no different than any other Hollywood film about a couple in a similar situation. It suggests that anything that deviates from a "normal" monogamous heterosexual relationship is wrong, and no matter how much trust you believe is rooted in your relationship, nothing will stop you from falling into a jealous rage with your partner. It simply not saying anything new or interesting. We've seen endless films explore relationships from this perspective. It would have been nice if Aselton was willing to bring something new to this area of discussion. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member It drowns under the weight of it's boring and slow story. Honesty is the best policy and when a couple can't be honest with each other then it's time to get out especially when it's as dull as this one. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member an honest but ultimately predictable movie about how fragile love can be. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member Blue Valentine covered the theme of a crumbling marriage much better. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Cute movie with a moral tale Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member Didn't see it, but find Dak so offensive, I know I'd hate it.
