Critics Consensus

The Front Room gets some mileage out of Kathryn Hunter's memorably grotesque turn as an in-law from hell, but the scatological scares in this family squabble are more off-putting than frightening.

Patrick Sproull Little White Lies The Front Room is an entertaining, morbidly funny slice of perverse B-movie exploitation horror. In the best way, it feels like something Joan Crawford would have starred in the 60s. Rated: 3/5 Oct 29, 2024 Full Review Siddhant Adlakha Empire Magazine Kathryn Hunter elevates everything she’s in, which goes double for a film as limp and directionless as The Front Room, the directorial debut of Max and Sam Eggers. Oct 27, 2024 Full Review Carlos Aguilar Los Angeles Times The perverse playfulness with which Hunter handles even the most grotesque scatological scenes fuels a disturbing yet stellar performance, one that’s far more memorable than the movie as a whole. Sep 9, 2024 Full Review Brian Viner Daily Mail (UK) [The Front Room] has a certain grisly swagger. Rated: 3/5 Oct 31, 2024 Full Review Jack Martin Film Feeder This is a film that just leaves you feeling grossed out, and not in the way that a horror film usually should. Rated: 2/5 Oct 28, 2024 Full Review Alistair Harkness Scotsman The Front Room is a specious, pregnancy-themed horror film with zero scares, no psychological nuance and a very juvenile understanding of pregnancy, parenthood, ageing and how people actually function in the world. Eric AM A trippy and sometimes relatable dark comedy/psychological thriller that dragged just a tiny bit here and there but was overall a very original concept. The actor who played the overbearing religious stepmother did an excellent job transforming into a genuinely creepy figure despite being elderly and mostly unable to perform any remotely strenuous physical acts. Absolutely loved the ending too. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/22/24 Full Review Beatrice L This movie was crazy! Brandy was outstanding!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/19/24 Full Review Kera W The Front Room demonstrates the true horrors of relationship, in-laws, and giving birth, but the execution of the film was not fully completed with exploitation of elderly with no real payoff. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 09/19/24 Full Review Sterling Very fun campy dark comedy psychological “horror” film! Kathryn Hunter is amazing in the film & Brandy & Andrew Burnap are delightful! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/16/24 Full Review Brandon Overall a waste of money and time Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/18/24 Full Review Jamila Really gooey body fluid. Humor or thrill/ fear? There was no clear definition. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/18/24 Full Review Read all reviews
