Cardinal Montanelli (N. Simonov) is a Roman-Catholic priest who holds a scandalous secret -- he has fathered an illegitimate son, Arthur (Oleg Strizhenov). The youth, despite the mystery surrounding his parentage, grows up to lead his fellow Italians in an uprising against Austrian occupation, going under the alias "the Gadfly." While the hero manages to elude enemy forces, his luck may not last forever. Can his father reconcile with him before it's too late?
