Gary Goldstein Los Angeles Times A soothing and transporting journey sure to inspire gardeners of all stripes to create their own slice of heaven. May 15, 2018 Full Review Frank Scheck Hollywood Reporter The gorgeous photography and soft-spoken commentary is all very soothing, but a little of it goes a long way. Apr 1, 2018 Full Review Helen T. Verongos New York Times Overall "The Gardener" is flat and lacking in soul, a word that comes up many times in the movie. Mar 29, 2018 Full Review Josh Terry Deseret News (Salt Lake City) Audiences may leave feeling they'll never approach Cabot's level of expertise, but they may conclude they have enough time to throw together a little vegetable garden after all. Rated: 3/5 Jun 19, 2018 Full Review Paul Parcellin Film Threat Like the garden itself, the film is nice to look at, but beyond its eye-candy appeal, it's decidedly light fare. Botanists and flora enthusiasts will undoubtedly find a lot to like about The Gardener, as would anyone looking for a soothing respite. Rated: 6.5/10 May 18, 2018 Full Review Alison Gillmor Winnipeg Free Press As summer winds down, gardeners looking to extend the season might want to take in this beautiful, contemplative documentary from filmmaker Sbastien Chabot. Audience Member I loved this movie. It was refreshing to spend time on nature's beauty and the art of Cabot's creation. The film's flow was effortless and told the garden's story and shared the same vision for how visitors should take in the Garden. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member For anyone who appreciates beauty in this world, this film is a must. Frank Cabot's garden is wonder, with a wide panoply of colors of paint from God, and Cabot as the applying brush. As he gently describes each section of the garden, and some of the history as to how it came to be what it is today, one is enveloped in a sea of gorgeous colors, all mixed to perfection. This film is NOT a drama, comedy, or fictional story, nor is it really a documentary, but really just a place where one can bathe in the beauty of nature. If approached this way, no audience member can turn away from it unmoved. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Don't expect any costumed superheroes to appear in this quiet cerebral documentary. I'll admit I know virtually nothing about gardening and horticulture, yet I found this film enabled me to escape from the world and enter into the wondrous garden of Frank Cabot, some 20 acres in Charlevoix County, Quebec. Cabot, who passed away in 2011 at the age of 86, was an acclaimed horticulturalist, garden designer, and philanthropist. Moving from Boston with his wife Anne, Cabot was a late bloomer (pun intended) in the gardening world, having started to be serious about it when he was in middle age. Over the years, he developed a magnificent garden where he wanted those who viewed it to have a sensual and emotional experience, as well as to be engulfed in surprises as they toured. He wanted individuals to each have their own perspective on what they saw and come away with a sense of awe or perhaps even be inspired to create their own gardens. In his latter years, Cabot was quite involved in funding charities with the proceeds of the guided tours, as well as helping to set up nature conservatories throughout America and Canada. All in all, obviously this doc is not for everyone, but for those who just want to lean back and enjoy the beauty of Cabot's garden, and learn what it takes to create and have it flourish, then there should be rewards here for you.
