Jack H Simultaneously strange, endearing, and portentious. The melancholy philosophical disquisitions stand in contrast to a deepening affection between an aging, lonely, and ennui-striken retired math professor and his sudden, enigmatic, and more vital younger roommate. Odd supernatural events are ultimately less compelling than the sweet comraderie between these two lost souls. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/13/24 Full Review Audience Member Very low-budget philosophical piece, odd and beautiful. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Audience Member This French drama directed by Jean-Claude Brisseau is not a movie which I could easily describe. I have to say that the main reason I watched it is the winning of the Golden Leopard at the 65th Locarno International Film Festival. I knew nothing about this movie before today! And I liked the beginning what it seemed as a warm story of Michel, a retired math teacher and widower who devotes his days to writing an essay about illusions of dreams or religion. Michel is without his wife for 29 years and missing her became a part of his everyday routine... until he hears strange noises in the hallway and rescues a girl from being beaten by a young man. He liked the company of the intelligent homeless girl, but very soon strange things started happening in his life and around the house. My problem with this movie wasn't acting, which was exciting and enjoyable... it was more of the undecidedness of what is this movie about! I had parody and gravity, femme fatale and amour fou, didactic monologues about God and the unknown... and at the end felt like flirting with everything and living us half way, with a simple Goodbye and Thank You. But, I enjoyed watching it - it was smartly made, low-budget movie set in the Paris apartment of the director, who casts himself as the main character. If you like movies with sound discussion about the belief in an illusion that could give people false hope and nothingness as a more unbearable alternative, maybe it's the time to check this film!
