Taylor L The Good Old Boys is Tommy Lee Jones' directorial debut, features not only Sissy Spacek and Frances McDormand but a pre-Good Will Hunting Matt Damon, and as of this writing it has a massive 126 views on Letterboxd. While the lack of recognition for this film may be due in part to the fact that it was created as a TV movie rather than a theatrical release, this project is oddly star-studded with names that were well-recognized even prior to release (though McDormand and Damon would each go on to greater things in subsequent years). That said, it's not a masterpiece by any standard, it seems more like Jones' attempt to take advantage of his acclaim from the Lonesome Dove series with a film of his own creation (as screenplay adapter, director, and star). The storylines are relatively straightforward, with an aging cowboy facing issues of very basic personal responsibility and an uncomplicated love story, all set against a background of hijinks that mostly feature world-wise cowpunchers poking fun at city slickers. There's very little sense of danger or thematic depth, it's overall a surprisingly safe film that really seems suited to cable TV. I don't know if it was a creative choice, but most of the characters in this film speak in really heavy drawls that make it very difficult to understand them.
