Nathalie Atkinson Globe and Mail The flitting glimpses of interesting moments and grand rooms don't shape into much of a narrative here, perhaps because the people featured also seem detached from a greater purpose. Rated: 2/4 Jun 26, 2015 Full Review Linda Barnard Toronto Star Armchair travellers will revel in this opportunity to see such a superb collection as well as all the toil and passion behind it. Rated: 3/4 Jun 25, 2015 Full Review Ben Kenigsberg New York Times Feels like a cursory guided tour. Apr 23, 2015 Full Review D.W. Mault CineVue The Great Museum is a beautiful love letter to obsession and eccentricity, the love is given and received in equal measure. Rated: 4/5 Apr 3, 2019 Full Review Susan G. Cole NOW Toronto Johannes Holzhausen's sumptuous documentary pays tribute to Vienna's Kunsthistorische Museum, its staff - from director to cleaners - and its legacy. Audience Member Rather lifeless, but there is some interest here and there. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review jake s Basically, an Austrian remake of "The National Gallery" documentary, except it, unfortunately, focuses almost entirely on the staff and administrative aspects and more or less ignores the works of art. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Rather enjoyed this film. Partly due to the style that it was made in. I found it slow and meticulous, filled with bits of humour thrown in throughout. A spotlight on the people who work in the background in the museums: from people who restore paintings and artefacts, to those that plan the budget and galleries. Interesting, and dealing with this subject, somewhat special (really, how many documentaries our there deal with the museums, much less talk about the museum itself rather than artefacts housed there) I would love to see other work from this director.
