What to Know

Critics Consensus

For a Yimou Zhang film featuring Matt Damon and Willem Dafoe battling ancient monsters, The Great Wall is neither as exciting nor as entertainingly bonkers as one might hope.

Kambole Campbell One Room With A View A sometimes entertaining, but otherwise forgettable two hours, The Great Wall sounds cool on paper, but feels more like a business deal than a complete film. Rated: 2/5 Aug 25, 2018 Full Review Scott Tobias Uproxx The Great Wall gives one of the world's great visual filmmakers $150 million and an army of extras at his disposal, and he turns a monument into a playground. Oct 10, 2017 Full Review Christopher Orr The Atlantic Zhang's moments of visual splendor-a battalion of hot-air balloonists, the queen-monster and her royal guard of fan-frilled monstrosities-are weighed down by a script and performances almost dutiful in their dullness. Mar 27, 2017 Full Review Victoria Luxford City AM With a ponytail and dodgy accent, Damon fits awkwardly into the mix, putting in one of the most uneven performances of his career. The fact a Western actor is leading an Asian film should be uncomfortable, but in a film this bad, its hard to care. Rated: 2/5 Feb 21, 2022 Full Review Drew Dietsch FANDOM The Great Wall is the equivalent of a well-made toy movie. It's a feast for the imagination, but your heart and brain will check out after a while. Rated: 2/5 Dec 29, 2021 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy All in all, it's just another brick in the wall of cinematic stinkers. Rated: 1.5/4 Aug 17, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Joshua M Boring snooze fest. Do not recommend at all... Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/05/24 Full Review Ginger S Yikes. The worst Matt Damon film by far. It seems they spent all their budget on special effects rather than script writing. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/30/24 Full Review M C When I first saw the trailer for this movie I gave it a miss. It seemed silly. After watching a couple of decent monster movies though I circled back around and decided to watch it. Plus I'm a big Dafoe fan. I wish I hadn't though. First the CGI monsters look awful. Not realistic in the slightly. The plot is surprisingly boring and the acting wasn't great. It relies too much on the explosions and slow-mo stunts to try and give it some wow factor. 2 hours too long in my opinion. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/25/24 Full Review Paul B Enough action and monsters to keep me entertained for a short time. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/18/24 Full Review Audience Member This was enjoyable somehow but there was absolutely no story to it and it wasnt that great designed , the cgi was pretty mad and even tho there were some great actors in the movie , the acting was not good at all, the whole plot twist werent that great and overall it just wasnt a good movie , only reason I gave it two star is cause , you can watch it it is enjoyable but nothing great Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/15/24 Full Review Shay W It does have some beautiful shots. For example, at around 47 minutes, the wall and surrounding countryside shrouded in mist. You do get a sense though that Matt Damon and Pedro Pascal don't want to be there, in the movie I mean. It looks wonderful, and maybe that's it's problem. The CGI is the star. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 06/10/24 Full Review Read all reviews
