Unfortunately, despite his obvious passion for the genre, Luke doesn't yet have the cinematic chops (or clearly, the budget) to effectively put his vision onscreen. Go to Full Review

It simply does not have the budget or craft for the scale it requires. Go to Full Review
Gary Goldstein Los Angeles Times 12/12/2019
Luke fills his at times heavy-handed, anachronistic script with enough sincere emotion and grace notes to counter the film's physical and financial restraints, narrowly staged combat scenes and limited character development. Go to Full Review

This inept drama about a segregated unit trapped behind enemy lines in WWI has little about it worth a recommendation — least of all its embarrassing treatment of racism. Go to Full Review

D H May 3 The Great War (2019) falls flat despite its ambitious subject matter. Intended as a gritty World War I drama, it suffers from weak acting, stiff dialogue, and a script that struggles to build any emotional connection. The performances feel wooden, making it hard to care about the characters or their mission. Attempts to create a tense, heroic atmosphere are undercut by clumsy writing and flat, heavy-handed exchanges that drag down the pacing. Visually, the film looks more like a low-budget reenactment than a serious war movie. Battle scenes lack intensity, with poor production values and staging that never sells the chaos of war. Although the story aimed to spotlight the often-overlooked contributions of Black soldiers in WWI — a noble idea — the execution is too sluggish and amateurish to leave much of an impact. In the end, The Great War feels like a wasted opportunity. See more Citizen S Feb 15 "Wooden" would be the best word to sum up this movie. And if you were looking for a badly made budget movie that shouted "cheap" at you, starting here would save you time. But if there was a reason for watching it, it would be to see rubber bayonets in action. And everybody is so clean. Made in 2019, it predated the technology, but a sneak preview of how bad AI generated movies might turn out See more 05/09/2022 Trama piuttosto confusa; di chiaro c'è solo il contesto storico con i precisi giorni in cui finì lo scontro; tutto il resto però appare nebuloso. See more 04/23/2022 The American sergeant throws a hand grenade without looking, 10 Germans are killed. The German sniper with a rifle with a telescopic sight shoots 3 Americans, only wounding one. What a lot of nonsense. See more 03/31/2021 Nice so it wasn't just me who thought I was watching Saving Private Ryan in WW1?! I can't believe someone read this script and said "OK". It just keeps going with the word for word SPR script its laughable... Lol /popcorn See more jim s 09/11/2020 Take the Saving Private Ryan script and set it in World War one. Substitute a platoon of Buffalo Soldiers for Matt Damon. Everything else is the same, complete with a letter from Abraham Lincoln, and the captain resolving tension by relating personal details. The film ends with a hopeless battle, outnumbered Americans defending. See more Read all reviews
