Lowery's elusive adaptation withholds its meaning up to and beyond that final image of a mossy stump. It's left to the viewer to puzzle out the ending for herself on the way home -- an invitation to another most excellent adventure.

Lowery's ability to represent dark and medieval fantasy in an original visual way, while adding to the deconstruction of the hero's journey, gives a sense of power to the film. Patel was the perfect choice. [Full review in Spanish]

I'm sure if I'd gone to school to be a film nerd, this would've been a cinematographers artistic paradise, but none of that really ads up to an entertaining movie. The set designs and costumes are lovely, and the fantastical elements that were sprinkled in were cool in concept, but the whole movie has maybe an hour of actual dialogue. You really find yourself waiting for something to happen, and then when it does, you're left wondering what just happened. If it's gonna be boring, it may as well be nice to look at, I guess.

This was the most pathetic attempt at movie making I have ever seen. I see 40 movies a year and I have never seen a weaker storyline, if it even had one. Who wrote this, a tenth grader ? Did they write it for any particular reason ? It made no sense, it had no plot, you never knew if he was in reality or a dream. The ending was baffling. He was praised but STILL got his head lopped off ??????
