Critics Consensus

There's some creepy imagery to be found, but not much in the way of logic or truly jarring scares.

Blu B It's defintely inspired by the Ring more or less and the results aren't as good. The editing isn't that good and the worst thing. It jumps around focus wise between Gellar, Pullman, the family that lived there previously and with multiple flashbacks jumping back and forth between past and present which makes it a little confusing but it does go super slow so it does eventually make sense. It does feel a bit jumbled and you could rearrnage a lot of it and not much changes. Everything else is ok enough. To it's credit the characters aren't dumb teens or cannon fodder and feel more believeable but there isn't a lot of dialouge in this and the emotion level is very muted. The villians are....alright I guess. We don't really find out that much about the family until the end. There is tons of jump scares in this and the scares remind me kind of like The Shining where there isn't really many rules as to what the ghosts can do but it is creepy and unsettling. It does ge boring though after a while because this goes really slow. Easily this feels over 2 hours. The jump scares do get tiresome but they are unique enough and aren't fakeouts so it does get some credit. The direction isn't bad but this is dull to look at at times and some scenes are stronger than others. It's a quiet film and it's nice to see a horror movie that doesn't fall prey to a lot of the cliches other horror flicks around this era did like Halloween or Jason X. But what is here isn't really scary, too slow, needs more focus, better execution, and more to seperate itself from The Ring. Skip It. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/24/25 Full Review Shaun R Rightly or wrongly,The Grudge and The Ring stand out as the better films of this genre in that era. Probably cos I can’t think of many more. Quite bland and predictable. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 06/20/25 Full Review Audience Member This movie was boring, it wasn’t scary, all jumpscares were predictable and i almost fell asleep watching it, i was told this one was one of the scariest horror movies of all time but it wasn’t scary at all, like oh and the story was confusing too, but the backstory of the grudge ghost and her child was sad Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 04/14/25 Full Review Jules N Le principal problème est le fait que Kayako n'est pas traitée comme un personnage à part entière mais juste comme un fantôme vengeur qui devient un prétexte pour tuer des personnages Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/11/25 Full Review E6 E Some good scares, but the story is just too illogical and confusing for me to be bothered to try to understand. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 04/08/25 Full Review Scott M Lots of fun and highly polished, but not nearly as scary as the original film or tv movie. It's hard to pinpoint what exactly makes this version less effective, but something seems to have been lost in translation. It's definitely worth a watch, but if you really want to be scared, watch the Japanese versions instead. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/28/25 Full Review Read all reviews
