Audience Member Exemplary pre-code gangster film loosely based on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member A pulpy pre-code gangster film with some family drama blended in the mix. Robert Young stars as Marco Ricca the son of gangster Tony Ricca (Boris Karloff). Marco's mother had left and taken him to Europe when he was quite young. He's become an architect and adopted the name "John Smith" (he's apparently not too good at coming up with aliases) to distance himself from his father. As luck would have it, he meets and falls in love with Maria Palmero (Constance Cummings), the daughter of a rival gangster (Leo Carrillo). The outbreak of war between their fathers threatens their relationship. The movie has a fairly racy edge to it and feels fairly modern in tone. Leslie Fenton and Murray Kinnell, Nails Nathan and Puttynose in "The Public Enemy", have sizable roles.
