See more Curtis A @RT30610387 5h The Cost of Being a Fan of the Source Material Having read Fire & Blood, I couldn't escape the feeling that House of the Dragon stretches a concise section of George R.R. Martin's history into more television than the story naturally supports. While expanding a historical chronicle is necessary, too much of the added material feels designed to fill episodes rather than deepen the narrative. Scenes linger, conversations repeat, and the momentum steadily fades. Some performances still shine, but others are left carrying scenes that demand emotional intensity without always earning it. The irony is that Game of Thrones found eight seasons within thousands of pages of novels, while the Dance of the Dragons has become four seasons from only a few hundred pages of historical text. There were things I liked and things I didn't about the first season of HOTD, but I still held on to the hope that this high-budget GOT prequel wouldn't let me down. Now, faced with questionable casting choices (who cast Mysaria?), weak writing (things happen simply because the plot demands they do, with little or no sense of cause and effect), and baffling changes to the original story (far too many to list), I'm officially disappointed. The show unfortunately still struggles with olivia cooke's unavoidably unlikeable disposition and fabien frankel's seeming desire to embody cardboard. Thankfully matt smith gets more breathing room and James Norton absolutely shines as the unpredictably villainous Ormund Hightower...charming, dangerous, abrasive and cunning all wrapped up into a brilliantly complex character. It feels extremely slow, especially Episodes 3, 4, and 5, where very little happens. The season promised more action, but so far it hasn't delivered. The premiere also felt weak because it didn't connect well with the ending of Season 2. The acting and production are still excellent, but the pacing and storytelling have been a major letdown.
