A solid cast and sound jokes keep this modest comedy out of The Gutter and on track for a perfect strike.

Christy Lemire FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) Feels like a Zucker Brothers movie. They throw so much at the wall, but a lot of it sticks, a lot of it doesn't, and it's dumb!... It's not "good," but I laughed a lot. Nov 13, 2024 Full Review Glenn Kenny New York Times In addition to ridiculous — think the Wayans brothers’ parody pictures, or “Napoleon Dynamite” — the humor is almost uniformly broad. Nov 6, 2024 Full Review Craig D. Lindsey RogerEbert.com As with most comedies that throw everything out there (and throw common sense out the window) to get laughs, some bits and pieces don’t land. But the Lesters thankfully cram in enough ghettofabulous gags to keep me continuously giggling. Rated: 3/4 Nov 1, 2024 Full Review Stephen Silver The SS Ben Hecht A silly, stupid comedy about bowling, and I couldn’t stop laughing my ass off at it. Jan 3, 2025 Full Review Robert Butler III Geeks of Color A film so unabashedly unserious that it reinvigorates a long-lost era of Wayans brothers-style humor. Dec 6, 2024 Full Review Carla Hay Culture Mix The Gutter is an apt way to describe this trashy and stupid comedy about obnoxious people involved in bowling tournaments. The racist jokes aren't funny at all and shouldn't be excused just because African American filmmakers put these jokes in the movie. Nov 24, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

landon thank god comedy is back Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/04/24 Full Review Audience Member Fun film to watch when you’re bored. Is it particularly good? No. Honestly though, if it can make you laugh then where’s the harm? 3.5/5 stars. Check it out. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/26/25 Full Review Ronnell S Sometimes you need to watch movies the way you could just turn off your brain and just enjoy the fact that the movie know exactly what it is and this comedy that’s beyond hilarious take on being ignorant as possible is a true definition of an enjoyable movie Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/14/25 Full Review Jan V Hollywood pitch meeting: "Hey, I've got an idea! Let's make another bowling comedy! But this time, let's center it all about race!". 'nuff said. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/06/25 Full Review Mike M Hard to find a comp, but Kingpin meets PutiTang was my first thought... Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/06/25 Full Review Ben D A rare pure-comedy, The Gutter throws everything at the audience for a legitimately funny movie, even if some of the bits end up in…ya know… the gutter. Walt (Shameik Moore) is a rambunctious, aimless soul who takes his shirt off at job interviews and lives at home with his irresponsible mom (Kim Fields). But Walt possesses a nascent talent for bowling and after teaming up with once-pro, Skunk (D’Arcy Carden), takes to the tournament circuit and quickly achieves notoriety and fandom in the oft staid professional bowling league — think Happy (Adam Sandler) on the PGA circuit in Happy Gilmore. Like any good sport’s movie, our protagonist has a rival. Here, it’s Linda Curson (Susan Sarandon), who comes out of retirement just to impeded Walt of breaking her single-season record. The comedy is packed with the sort of racial, sexual, and blue jokes that once pervaded the genre in the 2000s and have largely been missing for almost all of the 2010s and into the 2020s. There’s a Green Book line that doesn’t even make sense, a extremely niche joke about Shaun King being white, and many one-liners from Paul Reiser as Angelo, seemingly the only commentator of the league. Moore represents exactly what I’d like to see more of in movies. Achieving great success voicing Miles Morales in the Into the Spiderverse series (that has another installment on the way) he takes chances on something like The Gutter that is unique (for the time) and pure fun. Yes, some of it is stupid and I don’t think Carden matched Moore’s comedic caliber, but comedies that “flood the zone” with bits can be successful, if enough of the lines land. The ending tees us up (or sets the pins? Idk) for a sequel that we probably don’t need, but hey, I’d watch it anyway. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/27/25 Full Review Read all reviews
