John is on the run because he has betrayed a powerful crime lord, his father, Dad. To escape from his father and brother, John heads north and takes refuge deep in the forest near an isolated village in the extreme northern part of the country where religion dominates, the sun never sets, and local residents seem to be from a different era. The only thing standing between John and his destiny are Lea, a woman facing hardship with a great deal of strength, and her son Caleb, a curious, pure-hearted boy. While the midnight sun seems to confuse reality and fantasy, John grapples with a difficult past that torments him. Lea is struggling with her own demons: her violent husband Aaron died in an accident in the sea, and many in the village believe she had something to do with it.

Anna Smith Deadline Hollywood Daily The Hanging Sun is a workable and good-looking thriller, but it stays on the surface rather than staying with you. Sep 12, 2022 Full Review Jessica Kiang Variety It might be set during 24-hour daylight, but there’s a low-energy listlessness about “The Hanging Sun” that makes one drowse and check one’s watch to see if it might not be way past bedtime. Sep 12, 2022 Full Review Jonathan Romney Screen International The Hanging Sun is a bizarre mess from start to finish, one of those films that seems to come from nowhere, and to be set nowhere in particular. Sep 10, 2022 Full Review Danny Brogan Common Sense Media There are also some bizarre directorial choices. None more so than the decision to give young Caleb a jarring posh English accent.
