arvind s Thuramukham had been awaiting theatrical release for a long time. It's been almost 2 years now and it seemed like they finally decided to release it (announcing the release date just 10 days prior). Thuramukham is director Rajeev Ravi's most ambitious film till date if not his best. Set in the 40s & 50s, Thuramukham is the story of Kochi; particularly the Mattancherry area (port area) and the existence of what was known as the Chappa system. Workers had to fight for Chaappa or tokens that were flung at them to get work every day. The film progresses to show how unions came into being. Thuramukham focuses on Mymood's family as they traverse the changing landscape of the Kochi harbour. Thuramukham is Rajeev Ravi's most immersive & detailed work yet. The attention to detail in this film is extraordinary! From the attires to the way characters carry themselves to the background score; everything is to the point. The performances are mindblowing as well. Joju George, Nivin Pauly, Arjun Ashokan, Sudev Nair, Manikandan Achari and the stellar Poornima Indrajith; all of them give their best. Though Darshana Rajendran & Nimisha Sajayan don't have much to do here. With #rajeevravi at the helm, the cinematography is bound to be mindblowing & it is! The only concern I had with the film was it's length. For a film that goes deep into the world of yesteryear Kochi, it was bound to exceed conventional runtimes but it could have done with a 15-20 minute trim. Thuramukham is Rajeev Ravi's biggest film yet; both in terms of scale & length. It won't appeal to everyone because it requires immense patience to appreciate the beauty of it all. My favourite Rajeev Ravi film is still Kammatipaadam; another film about Kochi. But for film aficionados, Thuramukham is a must watch. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/16/23 Full Review Read all reviews
