Critics Consensus

The Hating Game's dismayingly retrograde approach to the battle of the sexes is often offset by the sparkling chemistry between its well-matched leads.

Leslie Felperin Guardian About as bland and as easily consumed as a cone of soft-serve ice-cream on a hot day. Rated: 2/5 Aug 8, 2022 Full Review Stephen Romei The Australian There are some decent twists, especially when we learn of Joshua's family history, and the chemistry between the two starsripples with possibility. Rated: 3/5 Feb 1, 2022 Full Review Jake Wilson The Age (Australia) It's a familiar but perfectly viable starting point, in a genre where what matters isn't the premise so much as what you do with it. But director Peter Hutchings and writer Christina Mengert have no ambitions to take us anywhere new. Rated: 2/5 Jan 28, 2022 Full Review David Nusair Reel Film Reviews ...tedious and uninvolving... KaitlinF I am a huge fan of the book and had high expectations going into the movie. They captured their relationship and overall storyline of the book beautifully. Lucy and Josh had great chemistry. Can't wait to watch it again! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/10/21 Full Review Kae Disclaimer: I never read the book. This also has spoilers. Main takeaway: The characters were immature and corny. The acting was bad, there was no tension to add to the plot, and it was cringy, uncomfortable and hard to watch. …………….. For a rated R movie, this is incredibly immature and corny. I’m pretty picky about movies, but more about the acting than the plot. If I can tell it’s two actors playing pretend, it’s honestly hard to watch. A great movie doesn’t only have an intriguing plot, but tension and emotion that you can get invested in. This movie is NOT THAT. This just feels unnatural and the music distracts from a lot of scenes where tension needed to be built, especially earlier in the movie. The acting is bad (nothing against the actors, just my opinion). To start out, when she has the dream about him, I was expecting her to feel a little tension and awkwardness. But she literally acts so unrealistically awkward and dramatic. Then not only does she tell him she had an erotic dream, she goes on to tell him the details almost completely unsolicited. After “hating” him now she’s suddenly trying to seduce him because of one dream? It’s honestly so cringy and uncomfortable that I could hardly even watch. Then when they kiss in the elevator, it’s annoying because there was no tension built up, it feels rushed and staged. There were a few scenes that seemed genuine, like when he brought her water when she was sick and when he was talking about his father and the planner. Also the rose and juice was cute. Other than that, everything seemed corny, in-genuine, and immature. Also lucy seems so desperate and i was getting whiplash from how quick she would go from one extreme emotion to the other. The entire movie was immature, like using Danny just to see if she likes Joshua, and Joshua telling her to do that, is such high school drama. After reading other reviews, I feel like this movie had potential but was just poorly executed. How they talk about Joshua’s character sounds like it would’ve been so much better than what is in the movie and would’ve actually created tension instead of just teasing. In the movie, I didn’t really like his character because it felt so surface level and like acting. I get he never actually hated her, but I feel like why even say they did and do all the theatrical fighting if they both liked each other all along. I respect that many people loved this movie, this one just personally wasn’t for me. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/13/25 Full Review Danielle E This film was surprising, endearing and beautifully written. It's a romcom so of course there was some predictability, but I found myself completely surprised by the twists and turns of Lucy and Joshua's path! A true feel good, lovely story. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/18/25 Full Review Sia T. the premise of the movie is so good, but its so bad. everything feels so forced its hard to watch, their chemistry was barely established before they had their main moment and then after that it was 0 to 100 for no reason. every moment of this movie had me extremely confused, especially the subplots but even more so the main plotline. Love the actors, maybe they were just given a bad script? mind you I was halfway through the movie, twenty minutes further its even worse Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/17/25 Full Review rotem k Enemies to lovers!! its a good movie. worth a watch Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/15/25 Full Review Lilli M. The book was obviously better. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/05/25 Full Review Read all reviews
