Anton Bitel Little White Lies Any way you piece it together and read between its scenes, though, Downey and his skeleton crew have crafted a richly atmospheric and relentlessly dark saga of evil incorporated. Apr 14, 2021 Full Review Noel Murray Los Angeles Times There's not much to this movie: just stunning outdoor locations, a soulful Rygh performance, and some raw sword-and-sorcery action. That's more than enough. Apr 5, 2019 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies Within this rich slice of fantasy horror is a subtle meditation on grief. The story is a tragedy of sorts, placed within a relentlessly harsh and despairing world. Rated: 4.5/5 Aug 21, 2022 Full Review John Townsend Starburst There were clearly budgetary battles, but Downey and his team have brought this world to life, however unpleasant and unforgiving that world may be. Rated: 4/5 Jun 28, 2021 Full Review Eddie Harrison film-authority.com '...The Head Hunter is rapidly gaining a cult reputation, and that's well-deserved; this is an atmospheric, well-shot and artfully conceived number which looks great in its first UK blu-ray release...' Rated: 4/5 Apr 14, 2021 Full Review Kat Hughes THN Screaming for a bigger budget and an additional couple of characters, The Head Hunter remains a valiant example of shoestring film-making. BRizz 2 I went into The Headhunter with high hopes—especially after seeing the strong Rotten Tomatoes critic score—but once again, this is another case of critical praise not matching the actual experience. Let’s be real: a lot of highly-rated films by critics end up being major letdowns, and this one fits that mold perfectly. The film is visually interesting at times, but that’s about where the praise ends. I was incredibly bored throughout the entire runtime. There’s barely any dialogue, and while some might say that adds to the atmosphere, it just left me confused about what was happening and why. The story felt scattered—sometimes it seemed to come together, but then it would just fall apart again. It’s a slow burn without the burn. There’s no real emotional pull, no character depth, and not enough intrigue to carry the runtime. Honestly, if I wanted to sit through something this vague and uneventful, I’d rather watch something worse that at least had some sort of dynamic or unintentional entertainment value. In all honesty, I don’t recommend this film. It may have style, but it’s missing the substance to back it up. Total miss for me. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/04/25 Full Review Audience Member Not the greatest, but I had low expectations based on some reviews. Low budget but I did enjoy what it was. I can imagine a Hollywood version being amazing! Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/30/25 Full Review nick s An action movie devoid of action, this feels like an exercise in cinematography and sound design rather than entertainment. It only has one character and one setting, giving it's world an empty, lifeless feel. There were almost no fight scenes, save one feeble encounter near the end. A few big guys in rubber masks and a bit of fight choreography would have done wonders. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 12/29/24 Full Review Thomas S Very minimalistic. I love the whole "lone wanderer" vibe. The ending left me speechless Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/01/24 Full Review Aidan O This movie is so pure. I consistently remember this movie for just being pure pure pure monster slaying. Camerawork etc is good, it all looks great, but best of all they decided to do a monster slaying movie and didn't shoehorn anything else in - no obligatory romance or anything like that. I mean ya, this monster slayer has his reasons, but the movie is pure and that's my point. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/03/24 Full Review Bob C I’ll get right to the point (of the spear), this is my favorite horror film of the current decade (and probably beyond). It may not be for everyone, however. If you like dialogue loaded, cgi heavy, thin world building and un-immersive experiences, this is probably not for you. The Head Hunter is a wonderfully resourceful homage to classic horror sfx that is beautifully captured over an amazing landscape. I understand that this was done on a minimal budget by Thanskilling creator Jordan Downey. Having seen that you’d not think this is the same filmmaker. The pacing is slow, but I’ve never had an issue with that when it comes to a story with good cinematography, and an interesting story. Use your imagination when watching and imaging the world our hero lives in…and clinch your fists as he goes after each bounty. I want to see more of this kinda stuff from Downey and I want to see Christopher Rygh’s star rise. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/31/24 Full Review Read all reviews
