Nathanael Hood The Young Folks The Heroic Ones is almost Peckinpah-esque in its grim reassessment of ancient China's cyclical violence and treatment of ethnic minorities. May 31, 2018 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member The Heroic Ones is a different change of pace for Chang Cheh, as this is more a large scale battle type movie rather than smaller displays of martial arts weapons fighting. The king of barbarian and his 13 general sons are known for being outrageous warriors, but discord among the brotherhood leads to the downfall of the clan. The first half has some experimental cinematography and lots of over the top action sequences, but the movie loses to basic logic when the king refuses to kill some traitors among his own. The ending fight is rather well choreographed, but by then we don't care since there will be no pay off with the film's actual villains. The one prolonged fight sequence with Ti Lung vs. dozens is the highlight, but this martial arts movie misses the mark in the second half.
