What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Highwaymen depicts law enforcement's side of the Bonnie and Clyde manhunt -- a story that's unfortunately not quite as entertaining despite its marquee leads.

Christy Lemire FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) A lot of why this works is because of [Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson's] chemistry together. Sep 23, 2019 Full Review Brad Newsome Sydney Morning Herald Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson on a mission to hunt down Bonnie and Clyde? It's a hard idea to hate, and this Netflix movie is easy enough to enjoy. Apr 12, 2019 Full Review Christopher Orr The Atlantic It's hardly an insult to acknowledge that The Highwaymen is no classic on the level of Bonnie and Clyde. But it is, in its way, the perfect corrective to Penn's film. Apr 2, 2019 Full Review Eddie Harrison film-authority.com ...while not exactly box-fresh, there’s lots to enjoy in two big star performances, a strong sense of period detail (as you’d expect from a $50 million production) and a decidedly retro ‘respect the law’ POV…. Rated: B May 10, 2024 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies I get the inevitable complaints of “too slow” and “not enough action”. Yet I found myself loving it – the slow burn, the prickly Costner, the subtle moral questions it tosses out there. Rated: 4.5/5 Aug 21, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Sebastian L The Highwaymen is not a bad movie in any way, and Costner and Harrelson bring a lot of weight to this somewhat worn out legend. What keeps the film from being great is the "for everybody"-road that's been taken. Artistically it's been played safe; the story, the dialogue and the characters seem familiar enough without being clichés and with a few striking exceptions the cinematography is just fine. I guess you don't go "guns blazing" with a budget this size - you do something adequate to keep everybody calm. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/19/24 Full Review Early W The movie sports two great performances by Costner and Harrelson as Hamer and Gault. Two former Texas Rangers that roam our nation's highways in pursuit of the infamous criminals Bonnie and Clyde. The portrayal of the two criminals is sparse as the focus is on the men hunting them and a slow burn of a detective story that focuses more on them following leads, and trying to deduce the trios (they had another prison escapee with them at the time) next course of action. The juxtaposition of law enforcement's thoughts on the cold blooded criminals vs. how the public views them as celebrities is quite interesting and poses many challenges for Gault and Hamer along the way. One might wonder if they had attempted their crime spree in modern times that it might have been easier to find them since odds are they would be posting to Tik Tok about their crimes. Definitely worth a watch if you are into slow burning police procedurals with a few intense action scenes. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/29/24 Full Review Audience Member It was okay. Some elements are cool, but it dragged too much. The best part of it was Harrelson. Cool to learn about history though. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/04/24 Full Review Christopher M Excellent movie. Good action, great story, and acting. This movie really transports you to another time period. One of the best movie ever released to netflix. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/18/24 Full Review R C Seeing other depictions of Frank Hamer made me want to check out The Highwaymen for Costner's portrayal. It's a sloow burn of a movie, but once that adds to the early 1930's bank robbery/depression movies that I enjoy. Great acting by both Costner and Harrelson as they chased down the slippery Bonnie and Clyde. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/17/24 Full Review Cork B Well acted, and the leads are great. The film is a bit too slow, and I know they were going for a 'what is the proper place of violence' maybe almost redemption story, but I didn't quite catch what the film was trying to say about violence.
