Critics Consensus

A welcome throwback to the suburban teen thrillers of the 1980s, The Hole is a scary, enjoyable return to form for director Joe Dante.

The Hole doesn't have the frantic wit of Dante's Gremlins 2 or the political import of his Small Soldiers, but it has something just as satisfying: a thorough understanding of the psychological underpinnings of the genre. Go to Full Review

Filmmaker Dante does a superb job of instantly luring the viewer into the proceedings by evoking the feel of its similarly-themed ’80s counterparts (including Dante’s own Gremlins)... Go to Full Review

Dante's direction manages to take a formulaic experience into exciting new areas, even if the larger themes at play don't get a major payoff. Go to Full Review

Dante's touch (aside from including a mandatory cameo by Dick Miller) walks a fine line between going too far and exploring dull general audience fare, a line he’s been walking with considerable success his entire career. Go to Full Review

TheMovieSearch R @TheMovieSearch Jan 6 The Hole is a solid middle-ground thriller that works more because of its direction and performances than its story. The director does a strong job establishing tone and developing characters quickly, making them engaging without heavy backstory. Side characters never distract, and the pacing stays tight enough to maintain suspense. The screenplay is where the film stumbles. The central idea of "evil" is poorly defined, teased as something world-ending but ultimately presented as far more limited and unclear. The mythology never fully commits, creating confusion about whether the threat is supernatural, psychological, or symbolic. The cast elevates the material. Teri Polo brings warmth and credibility, while Nathan Gamble and Haley Bennett share strong chemistry. Chris Massoglia anchors the film well. Despite an inconsistent ending, The Hole remains an enjoyable suspense watch. See more Jeepers C Jan 5 Great movie for the whole family. Kinda reminds me of a more timid version of The Gate. It has it's creepy moments, but they are toned down alittle. See more Melissa L @Agent99 Sep 7 Nice clean horror movie. Recommended!
