Every once and awhile a film so bad that it makes you angry just to watch it. Made specifically for tween girls there's lot of mindless smoothing without rationale, after which our heroine slaps the guys for questioning her intent. Get that lobotomy before watching.

Instead of being assimilated into an alien intelligence that has conquered the earth, Melanie(Saoirse Ronan) jumps out of a window from a tall building. Somehow she survives, even after literally putting a dent into the pavement. So, Wanderer is installed into her. But somehow Melanie still resides in the back of her brain. For the Seeker(Diane Kruger), that is not out of the ordinary, as she hopes to get Wanderer to provide intelligence on other humans like Melanie's younger brother Jamie(Chandler Canterbury) and friend Jared(Max Irons). Melanie has other ideas, however. Even at the best of times, it can be hard to visualize certain concepts of science fiction for the big screen. At the worst of times, you have the anticlimactic "The Host" which states in its own less than credible way that what makes us all human is inane soap opera, as expressed by author Stephenie Meyer's awkward sexual politics.(If Saoirse Ronan ends up looking lost, you know there is something seriously wrong with the story.) Even after a bad start, the movie does get somewhat better when William Hurt shows up on the scene. And Diane Kruger shows an adeptness for playing an alien that she had not shown for playing human beings over the past decade.

After an alien species has taken over her' body, a girl resists her invader and joins a group of humans looking to overthrow the aliens. Convoluted and cliche, this film is uninspired in every way. The rival boys, a bland recasting of Jacob and Edward without all the sparkling personality, are indistinguishable in looks and character, and Melanie doesn't emerge as unique. The plot plods along predictably, and the characters remain undeveloped. William Hurt, the sole reason I sat through this film, delivers a fine performance. He can't be blamed, but it's sad that even in The Village he got a great monologue that served to be worthy of his talents but in this film there's not a single inspired moment. Overall, what will it take for all of us to agree that Stephanie Meyer sucks.

I'm not sure why so many hated this one... I felt it had a lot of soul. The romance wasn't played out enough but that's not what the movie was about: it was about the love human beings have for their family and what lengths one goes to for it. It was also about teamwork, acceptance of those different from us, and sacrifice. I think this film told a familiar genre/story concept in a fresh and exciting way. I now want to read the book.
