Frank Scheck The Hollywood Reporter Despite the essentially formulaic nature of the proceedings, the film does boast some nasty twists that prove galvanizing. Jun 23, 2014 Full Review Dennis Harvey Variety Real suspense and shocks are MIA in a movie that's eventful but lacks the atmospherics needed to be scary. Jun 15, 2014 Full Review Gary Goldstein Los Angeles Times Though the dialogue is pretty basic and the narrative dots don't always quite connect, "The Human Race," in its own gutsy, grindhouse-movie way, manages style, vision and tension. Jun 12, 2014 Full Review Paul Freitag-Fey Daily Grindhouse Good enough to be frustrating when it falters, placing it somewhere near the middle of the genre, even if it's so alternately well-made and ill-conceived that 'mediocre' doesn't quite describe it. Aug 2, 2019 Full Review Todd Jorgenson Cinemalogue The central gimmick is just another excuse to let the bloodletting commence in this low-budget thriller. Jun 30, 2014 Full Review Brian Orndorf Blu-ray.com Instead of a grandly ghoulish dash for survival, the movie revels in ghastly behavior with a mouthbreathing concentration that's as irritating as it is worthless. Jeffrey P Not a bad idea for a movie, just absolutely horribly done and told. Wanted to turn it off 15 minutes in. There was less than an hour left by the time I came to this conclusion so I decided to finish it so I could post this review and save others from viewing this. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/12/23 Full Review Audience Member i'idnt think id like but i did. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member The name of this is really clever. It works in a lot of different ways. A whole block of people appear in this weird area and are forced to race for survival. If they are lapped twice their heads explode. If they get off the path their heads explode. They have to race or die. What I liked about this is the way in which the group started to behave. "The human factor." They began to turn on each other. Friends suddenly became enemies. And civilized peaceful humanitarians became killers. It just goes to show you what people will do if they have to. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member I gave it an extra half point because the premise is great. Not unlike Battle Royale, this movie begins with a group of strangers (80 exactly) who must compete until there is one winner. They race around a giant track filled with houses a school and a prison. Rule 1- don't step on the grass rule 2- don't get lapped twice Rule 3- don't stray from the path. Consequence is death. Other than that it's poorly acted and awkwardly cheesy at some points. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Audience Member For it's interpretation of "humans' initial reaction to survival instinct" is lackluster at best, representing people as blood hungry savages. So, you can't step on the grass or leave the map without dying. Want to know the easiest way to get out of this situation? STOP RUNNING! If everyone just stopped in their place, we would have a plot that literally would not be able to go anywhere. Playing that humans will selfishly run for their lives, though sounds realistic at first, is questionably illogical after the second thought. It's just an excuse to have a bloody movie with little to no reason to have blood. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Audience Member I don't judge movies on how similar they are to other movies e.g. I thought Devil's Due was a great movie but most people said they hated it because it was too similar to Rosemary's Baby. In the case of 'The Human Race', it is clearly a rip-off of Battle Royale, however, this is not something I would have minded, had the movie actually been good. I don't think this movie is terrible, it's just very average. In fact this movie, for me, is the definition of an average movie. The main things in this movie that stood out to me as bad were: 1. The characters were all annoying and not very likeable 2. All 80 characters (aside 1 or 2) died in exactly the same way 3. The film-makers decided to use CGI for when the characters heads exploded which was annoying because the CGI wasn't very good and nearly every death in the movie was an exploding head so you have to see the bad CGI over and over 4. The screenplay was rubbish, so most of the things the characters said were cheesy In conclusion, this is a very average movie, annoying at times, but very watchable.
