      Critics Consensus

Smart and well-acted, The Hummingbird Project marks a flawed yet undeniably intriguing addition to writer-director Kim Nguyen's filmography.

isla s This is a character based drama film I'd say, a corporate one at that, with somewhat quirky characters. It has a bit of a humdrum feel to it (I guess its subtle in tone) for the most part. There are a number of sub plots present. I thought it was interesting seeing Penelope Cruz as a somewhat cutthroat businesswoman. As I said, its a pretty corporate film in a sense, although, interestingly, the film is partly set in a rural area. It has a human aspect to it, with the health issues that one of the main characters has, that he's reluctant to speak out about. Its sad but good, particularly towards the end, when it becomes poignant. Jesse Eisenberg gives a good performance in this film and yes, I'd recommend this film to others. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review alejandro p It talks about an ambitious and at the same time deadly obsession. It is a moderately developed story that does not end up touching the sensitive "strings". Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Entertaining enough. You really feel like you're going on the journey with the two main characters. The end is kinda sad and a tad lackluster. Regardless, this was a well done drama and something I would watch in the future. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie had a premise that sounds promising and I was looking forward to watching it. 30 minutes in and it felt like I was watching a disjointed, confused, and indecisive college student's film. The director needed to pick a lane and run with it. Instead it was mush of plot ideas decorated with some decent, but not stellar, acting. I'd like my 2 hrs back. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Audience Member Selma Hayek is a terrible actor and horribly miscast in this role. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 10/13/21 Full Review tom m While I recognize that Jesse Eisenberg is a good actor, I don't like the characters he plays (conniving, know-it-alls) and I grow a bit weary of them. This was another instance of that sort of story. Despite that the movie was okay, but not great. Alexander Skarsgård and Salma Hayek filled their roles well. Kathleen Sachs Chicago Reader What might have made for either a thrilling, high-stakes drama or, at the very least, an intelligent comedy, ends up wildly uneven. Mar 13, 2020 Full Review Ian Freer Empire Magazine Although sometimes it gets bogged down in the details of drilling, The Hummingbird Project extracts enough entertainment value from an unpromising premise, greatly helped by Jesse Eisenberg finding the humanity in his hustler. Rated: 3/5 Jun 17, 2019 Full Review Wendy Ide Observer (UK) Part thriller, part family drama, part satirical commentary on the way that the pursuit of wealth is a cultural cancer that taints everything it touches, The Hummingbird Project is no less compelling for its odd mishmash of components. Rated: 4/5 Jun 16, 2019 Full Review Michael J. Casey Boulder Weekly Eternally relevant and immediately obsolete. Rated: 3/5 Jun 15, 2021 Full Review Richard Crouse Richard Crouse Sets its sights beyond the story of Wall Street intrigue to focus on something much bigger, the effects of global capitalism.
