Kim Nguyen
With his uncanny knack for telling utterly unique stories on screen, Kim Nguyen became a powerful voice in the world of cinema. Born in Montreal, Canada in 1974, Nguyen earned a bachelor's in film studies from Concordia University and a master's in cinematography from Université de Montréal. He completed his first short film, "Soleil Glace" (2000) in 2000. With little financing but an abundance of creativity, he completed his first feature, the period fantasy "The Marsh" (2002), two years later. Nguyen would spend the next few years writing and directing small-budget projects, which helped shape his abilities as a director as well as his voice as a filmmaker, each one growing steadily in scope. By the time of his drama set in Sub-Saharan Africa "War Witch" (2012), Nguyen was in Burundi interviewing ex-child soldiers for the script. The film would prove a critical hit on the festival circuit, drawing increased attention to his next project, the drama "Two Lovers and a Bear" (2016). His following film "Eye on Juliet" (2017), a romantic drama about a relationship facilitated by a drone, garnered even more interest, particularly at the Venice Film Festival, where Nguyen himself could only attend the event for two days due to his next film, "The Hummingbird Project" (2018) already being in pre-production. Featuring a cast that included Jesse Eisenberg, Aleksander Skarsgard, and Selma Hayek, "Hummingbird" paved the way for Nguyen to enter mainstream film.
