What to Know

Critics Consensus

Though it struggles to find its footing between thrilling caper and comedic drama, The Assassin is sustained by the full array of talent shared between Keely Hawes and Freddie Highmore to splendid effect.

A series with a first-rate cast that suffers a few too many self-inflicted wounds. Go to Full Review

Almost nothing anybody in The Assassin does makes sense for the person doing it. Nor does it not make sense. It’s just plot, expressed through pretty people. Go to Full Review

The set-up might be a little stilted, but by the second episode it settles into solidly entertaining potboiler territory. Go to Full Review

The Assassin offers a globe-trotting spy thriller story where its mother-son family bond is at the center. It doesn't stick the landing in every aspect, though I found myself endeared by its multifaceted story. Go to Full Review

It’s a big disappointment, then, that their latest six-part joint venture, the international comedy thriller The Assassin is something of a misfire. Go to Full Review

The chemistry between Hawes and Highmore sustains each of the six episodes and shows that the action isn't measured solely in fights or explosions, but in the cracks of a family relationship pushed to the limit. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Julia B 28m There were so many problems in just the first ten minutes. For example, it plainly says, "Bulgaria: 1994," and after a really boring and improbable fight/shooting scene where at the end the assassin faces a baddie who asks why she didn't email or text? Huh? And then she whips out a pregnancy test, as one does after killing ten people? Huh? See more Stephen C @bob25009 Nov 19 6 successful episodes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! See more Sayit H Nov 12 I have suddenly realised where the great reviews are coming from - the people have either watched a different Assassin - or they are a cast member, family member or have an interest in this doing well. They are really trying to hard to 'save' something that is not worth saving. Far better shows than this, have been cancelled. This is a masterpiece of disaster. Season 1? Please tell me they are not making any more of this absolute rubbish. First of all, they want an audience to believe that the leading lady - who is more like a strange looking mannequin is an actual assassin. Ms Hawes has always had a limited range (she comes across the same in everything - just reading the script). Never seems genuine, and the voice is patronising. Like finger nails scraping on a board. Have seen this described as a comedy. Think it is supposed to be serious. Remember the Kenny Everett sketch - the inflating posterior. There is one scene where 'the assassin' is wearing a cap and holding a rifle - well Ms Hawes's head looks like it is inflating in each shot. Is it the camera work - or the botox..... It is more pathetic than a comedy. Totally unbelievable. You are trying to portray to the audience - this person is capable of taking on professional killers .... come on - you need a real imagination for that. Ms Hawes could get away with it in the Sunday evening slot with the dreary series 'The Durrells'. Not required to do a lot of action - and just give me the lines . 'Mummy knows best' cringe worthy - this series is more like 'Mrs Durrell finds a Gun'. We had to check to see if we were watching a critically acclaimed series - thinking we had the wrong 'Assassin' - where did these good reviews come from.... the wine must have been flowing well, with a free lunch thrown in. Is it a test to see the audience will follow like sheep - and agree. This series given such a build up? Why? The acting/writing and non existent story-line. Trying to shock - the only shock is - this got made in the first place. The 'side-kick' being the chap out of the 'Good Doctor' - looks more like a deer trapped in headlights - or just coming out of a coma ...........where we thought we were heading after the first episode of this. Please don't continue wasting money on this. The audience deserves much better. See more Ian C Sep 2 Poorly acted, poorly cast and awful dialogue with a drawn out amateurish and farfetched plot and unnecessary sub plots. Worryingly this is billed as “Season 1”!!! See more George B Aug 25 There are many gripping ‘I’ve found out my mum/dad was an assassin’ type films, but this one is tepid, over complicated and bland. Lots of action arcade shooting and ample dead bodies but many films do this better. I didn’t care about any of the characters and could barely be bothered to understand what was happening to them. The main assassin character had a contrived menace which didn’t work, even though sh*t and f**k were liberally sprinkled about to try and make it more gritty. I felt all the exotic locations were wasted. Maybe I just don’t get the genre? See more Simon P Aug 21 We stuck with this until the end but was left feeling that we should have quit earlier. The action and plotting are fine, but all the characters are inherently unlikeable. The main character "The Assassin"is morally reprehensible with no redeeming features and I would have been quite happy for her to die at the programmes climax. This meant that there was absolutely no tension in the denouement. See more Read all reviews
