Rebecca Nicholson Financial Times The set-up might be a little stilted, but by the second episode it settles into solidly entertaining potboiler territory. Rated: 3/5 Aug 5, 2025 Full Review Tom Peck The Times (UK) What’s arguably most intriguing about The Assassin is that there is an easy way to get hold of a flawless comedy thriller, one with all the whip-smart, antic charm of, say, Killing Eve or Daniel Craig’s last Bond movie, No Time to Die... Jul 29, 2025 Full Review Sean O'Grady Independent (UK) “Implausible” is the word that springs to mind with The Assassin. This is frustrating, because so much of the production is absolutely plausible -- to the extent that, while watching it, I actually felt like I was on set and part of the action. Rated: 3/5 Jul 29, 2025 Full Review Barbara Ellen Observer (UK) It’s a big disappointment, then, that their latest six-part joint venture, the international comedy thriller The Assassin is something of a misfire. Oct 9, 2025 Full Review Juan Pablo Russo EscribiendoCine The chemistry between Hawes and Highmore sustains each of the six episodes and shows that the action isn't measured solely in fights or explosions, but in the cracks of a family relationship pushed to the limit. Sayit H Season 1? Please tell me they are not making any more of this absolute rubbish. First of all, they want an audience to believe that the leading lady - who is more like a mannequin is an actual assassin. Ms Hawes has always had a limited range (she comes across the same in everything - just reading the script). Never seems genuine, and the voice is patronising. Like finger nails scraping on a board. Have seen this described as a comedy. Think it is supposed to be serious. Remember the Kenny Everett sketch - the inflating posterior. There is one scene where 'the assassin' is wearing a cap and holding a rifle - well Ms Hawes's head looks like it is inflating in each shot. Is it the camera work - or the botox..... It is more pathetic than a comedy. Totally unbelievable. You are trying to portray to the audience - this person is capable of taking on professional killers .... come on - you need a real imagination for that. Ms Hawes could get away with it in the Sunday evening slot with the dreary series 'The Durrells'. Not required to do a lot of action - and just give me the lines . 'Mummy knows best' cringe worthy - this series is more like 'Mrs Durrell finds a Gun'. We had to check to see if we were watching a critically acclaimed series - thinking we had the wrong 'Assassin' - where did these good reviews come from.... the wine must have been flowing well, with a free lunch thrown in. Is it a test to see the audience will follow like sheep - and agree. This series given such a build up? Why? The acting/writing and non existent story-line. Trying to shock - the only shock is - this got made in the first place. The 'side-kick' being the chap out of the 'Good Doctor' - looks more like a deer trapped in headlights - or just coming out of a coma ...........where we thought we were heading after the first episode of this. Please don't continue wasting money on this. The audience deserves much better. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/12/25 Full Review Ian C Poorly acted, poorly cast and awful dialogue with a drawn out amateurish and farfetched plot and unnecessary sub plots. Worryingly this is billed as “Season 1”!!! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/02/25 Full Review George B There are many gripping ‘I’ve found out my mum/dad was an assassin’ type films, but this one is tepid, over complicated and bland. Lots of action arcade shooting and ample dead bodies but many films do this better. I didn’t care about any of the characters and could barely be bothered to understand what was happening to them. The main assassin character had a contrived menace which didn’t work, even though sh*t and f**k were liberally sprinkled about to try and make it more gritty. I felt all the exotic locations were wasted. Maybe I just don’t get the genre? Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/25/25 Full Review Simon P We stuck with this until the end but was left feeling that we should have quit earlier. The action and plotting are fine, but all the characters are inherently unlikeable. The main character "The Assassin"is morally reprehensible with no redeeming features and I would have been quite happy for her to die at the programmes climax. This meant that there was absolutely no tension in the denouement. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/21/25 Full Review mt 7 Brilliant Keeley Hawes, hilarious movie. Nice settings. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/17/25 Full Review mark m It's such a shame, a brilliant cast, lovely setting, obviously a huge budget... yet the story was as if a bunch of stoned teenagers suddenly said to each other, 'hey, got a great idea for a tv show' and came up with the most ridiculous and inane script ever written. Sorry, but with all of the hype and trailers, I was hoping for so much more. Please don't make a second series, and spend the money on something better.
