What to Know

Critics Consensus

While scattered plotting occasionally drains the fear from its chilling premise, IT: Welcome to Derry compellingly deepens the myth of Pennywise through sharp social commentary, a dreadful atmosphere, and committed performances.

It’s only made more frustrating by the simple fact Welcome to Derry doesn’t have enough material to otherwise fill its runtime, or at least the runtime of the five episodes (of eight) screened for critics. Go to Full Review

The most churny moments come not from the supernatural but from the day-to-day of living in America. Go to Full Review

There's something about this that makes me think it's better as a set of really gross set pieces than it is as a version of IT. ...so much is lost from what I think of as the point of IT, that I'm not sure what this is really supposed to be about. Go to Full Review

IT: Welcome to Derry has impressive horror elements and an immersive setting, but it rehashes a story we’ve seen one too many times before. Go to Full Review

It: Welcome To Derry might not have enough Pennywise to satisfy fans of Bill Skarsgård's character, but it's still a solid entry into Stephen King's terrifying fictional universe. Go to Full Review

It: Welcome to Derry is a successful entry in the Muschietti’s ‘It Cinematic Universe’. There’s plenty of gore and blood, and Pennywise dancing around the sewers to haunt the Losers Club for the rest of their lives. Go to Full Review

A S @Waaromzomoeilijk 5d There where Stranger Things left a hole in the market, this serie filled the gap and brought this genre to another level. Well done. See more Melissa P @elle_1511 6d Who wrote this sh*t? I wish Ash vs Evil Dead was still making new shows because this season would give it so much content. Are we actually supposed to be afraid of a two headed, winged demon baby? The birthing "horror" scenes in the first and second episodes are so bad, they aren't even bad dad-joke funny. How anyone made it past these attempts at scaring an audience with no real suspense or build up of characters the audience cares about is surprising. It criminal that the writers would ask us to invest more of our precious time after these extremely boring and CGI attempts at horror. The original IT movie with Tim Curry didn't have fancy special effects BUT had a great story that got the audience hooked and made a much more entertaining watch. These show uses cheap tricks for attempts at jump scares and makes it so boring/laughable. I gave one star for being set in the 60s & the nostalgia of the era. But like other viewers mentioned, stop with the constant racism reminders. See more Tom L @ExMachina Feb 22 The show has a "Stranger Things" vibe, but it's ten times scarier. See more Gabriel S @Sanarel Feb 20 IT: Welcome to Derry largely works—and works well. The overall arc is engaging, expanding the IT mythos with layered backstories and smart connections to Stephen King’s wider universe without feeling forced. The story flows smoothly, hooks you from the start, and leaves you wanting more. Characters are strong, evoking classic Losers’ Club nostalgia, with solid performances and a genuinely creepy Pennywise. Cinematography is polished and confident, as expected from the director of the 2017 and 2019 films. The main misstep is the military subplot, which feels unnecessary and disconnected from Derry itself, along with some forced lore additions that dilute the core theme of friendship as IT’s true weakness. Still, these are mostly pet peeves. As a whole, the series is a high-quality production with a terrifying, effective first episode and a compelling hook for what’s to come. See more Mickey B. @MickeyBeyond Feb 18 This must have been during Big P’s PRIME! cause nobody’s safe! He’s taking EVERYBODY with him! and no I don’t think the “power of friendship” would have been sufficient during this timeline! This makes me think the losers club from the OG story won out of dumb LUCK! 😭 See more Read all reviews
