Critics Consensus

Turning an uncomfortable conceit into an emotionally resonant comedy makes Alice and Steve the best chaotic friends to spend some time with.

You’re never quite sure how to watch it: as a suburban satire, or something heavier -- an interrogation of our time of age-gap scepticism? And on the whole, I’d suggest you don’t. Go to Full Review

The writing is of the humanistic live-and-let-live variety -- and much of it is good... But it wasn’t enough for me to cry uncle. I couldn’t get over the ick. Go to Full Review

At the show’s core is a volcanic performance from British TV stalwart Walker, and a rich treatment of a potentially hackneyed theme: You always hurt the one you love, because that’s the one who actually cares. Go to Full Review

…a short, compelling watch, and refreshing to see an older female character depicted with honesty…Alice and Steve’s battle of wills plays out entertainingly in a The War of the Roses series of acts of mutual destruction…. Go to Full Review

...the true star of 'Alice and Steve' is Nicola Walker. Her Alice is a neurotic, selfish, petty, cruel, manipulative, cynical, and sarcastic avalanche. She's a roadside wreck that makes you stop in your tracks. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Complicated and very funny, this dramedy takes a trope-ish situation and turns it into a searingly realistic exploration that never fails to surprise. Go to Full Review

Colleen T @T-Coo 4h Went in pretty blind, but halfway through and I think it’s great. The creator wrote on the good seasons of Sex Education, so if you like that, you’d probably like this as well. See more Sarah T @Sarah_112 6d Please, please renew!! This is funny and multi-faceted and poignant and a wonderful pastiche of love - types of love, who to love, unrequited love. I have such a soft-spot for Alice’s husband and hope they continue in their current avoidant but in love attachment for a few more episodes at least! See more Robert S @RT89139686 Jun 19 Nicola Walker is one of my favorites, and the cast of this show is great and fun to watch. But I didn't love the first season enough to stick around for the second season that is clearly foreshadowed by the closing episode. Walker's character is too broadly drawn to be believable and that lack of credibility detracts from a story that might otherwise have worked. See more Lee B. @Elenaferrante Jun 16 Engaging and fun. The war of the roses with a friendship. Needs a season 2 See more Andrei D @RT74856639 Jun 15 Too many C plots and flirts with going too dumb a few times but Clement really sells it See more Steven S. @G0dJester Jun 15 This show’s biggest failure isn’t in it’s reprehensible premise. It’s that it tries to walk the line of drama and comedy. Choosing one over the other may not have made this great but it probably would have been better. In addition to that it features utterly unlikable characters meaning this show was never going to appeal to me. Would Not Recommend See more Read all reviews
