What to Know

Critics Consensus

A twisty mystery that grows more addictive as it unfolds, Down Cemetery Road is tonally imbalanced but has a steadfast center of gravity in Emma Thompson's flinty star turn.

Alan Sepinwall What's Alan Watching? (Ghost.io) Down Cemetery Road has its moments, but overall is a reminder that what Slow Horses does is a lot harder than it appears. Nov 11, 2025 Full Review Wenlei Ma The Nightly (AU) With a mix of compulsive storytelling and two commanding performances from its female leads, Down Cemetery Road is a winner. Nov 5, 2025 Full Review Mark Kermode Kermode and Mayo's Take (YouTube) The main sort of pleasure of this... is the characters themself. Nov 4, 2025 Full Review Chris Joyce Movies and Munchies (YouTube) The season contains enough mystery and cloak-and-dagger to maintain interest and suspense, but also not so dramatically dark that you won’t want to come back week after week. Rated: 4/5 Nov 12, 2025 Full Review Jeanine T. Abraham VisAbleBlackwoman (Medium) As I watched Down Cemetery Road, I was struck by how intentionally Black women were cut out of the story and white women were portrayed as the only salvation for a corrupt system. Rated: 2/5 Nov 11, 2025 Full Review Paul McGuire Grimes KSTP-TV (St. Paul, MN) Ruth Wilson and Emma Thompson make for a dynamic pair together. Rated: 3/5 Nov 10, 2025 Full Review Read all reviews

Anna J Dreadful on every level. It's a caricatured, a cartoon strip that doesn't work, everything is over-egged and its deeply painful to watch. How a Mick Herron novel with such a strong cast could turn out this badly is quite unfathomable... My partner read the novel and loved it and he could barely watch it. We got through episode 1 but won't bother with the rest. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/17/25 Full Review A. M. J Everything about the series looks good on paper, a conspiracy series with Emma Thompson as a private detective. However, the writing is atrocious. The plot feels derivative, character choices (Sarah!) implausible, numerous very convenient coincidences drive the story as if it was a fanfic written by a ten year old. Zoë Böhm could be interesting if she was less cartoonish. Sarah is both annoying and boring and I can't see any way this character could be saved. Supporting characters are either clichéd or feel like parodies. There's no tension or suspense whatsoever, which in a conspiracy-related story is a mortal sin. You can see where the plot is going from a mile away and there's nothing to keep the viewer from walking away. The tone is uneven, with moments of a wannabe thriller, moments of wannabe comedy that never really land, and plenty of bloated filler TV. The pacing is off. Whatever the show was aiming for, it misses because it's simply too boring. It's not that it's some sort of a slow-burn show, these can be amazing (Better Call Saul, anyone?). There's a lot happening there, just nothing really to make you care. Rating: D. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 11/16/25 Full Review Anne B. Even with a great cast this poorly written contrived script can’t hold my attention. If you like thrillers where everyone magically shows up at the same place, at the same time and where every character is a trope, then you’ll enjoy this. It was too forced to draw me in. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/15/25 Full Review John M. Seemed promising but the story makes no sense. Something about a young girl everyone wants but no one knows why? Why does Wilson become obsessed with this kid she doesn't know? This is England home of MI6 and they're outsourcing important work to someone who blows things up and gets civilians killed? Watchable because of the talent but the writing is bad. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/15/25 Full Review Cindy M Love lead actors Ruth Wilson and Emma Thompson but the rest of the cast has poor writing so they cannot shine. The plot is preposterous-Wilson becomes obsessed with a child she does not know and Thompson gloms on to her obsession. The plot is confusing, who is who? Characters are shrouded in mystery as to who they are, who they work for and their intentions which sometimes can work to create tension, mystery and intrigue but done so poorly here, that it is frustratingly unwatchable. I will continue watching with the hope that the comedy goes dry and the intrigue increases. Season two if there is one, needs to read these reviews and learn. This IS NOT Show Horses, not even in the same league. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/13/25 Full Review Duane R The writing doesn't come close to that of Slow Horses. It's just okay.
