What’s so astonishing about “The American Revolution” is how it deploys what has long been called the “Ken Burns effect” to an altogether sharper end... The new series is the best film out of Burns’s shop and, I suspect, the hardest to make. Go to Full Review

“The American Revolution” is not just a history lesson, but a reframing. Go to Full Review
Chris Vognar Boston Globe Nov 17
It is a dense, exhaustive, and, yes, highly rewarding march through a period of early American history that treats generalizations and cliches the way patriot mobs treated suspected loyalists. That is, not very kindly. Go to Full Review

Such a well rounded portrayal of this time of American history. Not just the perspective of the patriots. Go to Full Review

From the early taxation of the 13 American colonies to the horrifically violent battles fought by militia groups and the Continental Army, the brilliant docuseries offers interpretations of the American Revolution that are educational and powerful. Go to Full Review

The series is sprawling in every way that matters, digging into popular myth to reveal stories and perspectives that have long been ignored. Go to Full Review

J D 4d There is bias here for sure, but not as bad as it could have been. I mostly enjoyed the overview of the battles and following the armies; this was done well. But there was a very clear point in showing the revolution to be a morally confused undertaking, even a bad thing. They paint the British as friends of African slaves which is laughable. If the British controlled the colonies for almost 200 hundred years before the revolution, why didn’t they free slaves and cease the slave trade then? They pretty much have nothing good to say about the colonists or founding fathers which is to be expected from wokies and that’s okay; it is one side of the narrative. As long as you are capable and comfortable doing your own research and forming your own opinions about history, then you should have no problems watching this doc, swallowing the meat, spitting out the bones, and remaining unaffected by their somewhat subtle attempts to control your thinking or opinion. See more John L Nov 29 This was a strange interpretation of the American Revolution. It would seem to be that the perspective was against the American revolution rather than for it. There is no mention of how many Americans came in colonies as indentured servants or that American colonies abandoned the slave trade immediately after the constitution was written. The result is a depressing focus on all negative involved in the revolution from the American side. Unhappy 250th American! See more Christopher H Nov 28 As an American history buff, I can safely say that many details are omitted or false. For example it claims the 6 indian tribes were a democracy but there was no such thing. The production is amazing but not good and could definitely be written better See more Nov 28 As an educator I was looking forward to this series as a potential classroom tool. However, the more I reflect on its content, the more disappointed I am in the coverage provided. This series fails to give reasonable and balanced context to events and personalities while at the same time gives short shrift to the founding fathers. I can't help but feel the creators were more focused on pushing a viewpoint than providing a clear, balanced, and complete history of events. See more Janice T Nov 24 I’m a big fan of Ken Burns. But let’s face it, this is no Civil War. It’s a tired old retelling of the same story we’ve already heard. What is more interesting for those truly interested in the origins of our country, read or listen to Russell Shorto’s masterpiece book "the island at the center of the world." His remarkable research and story begins long before 1776, when the very first settlers created what is now known as New York City and how they lived peacefully with the indigenous people. It’s a story of different cultures, religions, and languages all living together for almost 100 years. This is truly the origins of America. Not the revolutionary war. See more David M Nov 23 As with every film or series Ken Burns has directed, produced or shepherded, The American Revolution is excellent. The overall breadth, depth and quality of content, the stories & storytelling, the narration and voice overs, the artwork and production, the way so many threads, topics and perspectives are woven into a compelling narrative arc…. Simply outstanding. While I’m a huge fan of his prior work(s) - e.g., Civil War, Baseball, Jazz, etc. - this may be his and his teams’ best. Highly recommended to history buffs and the history curious. See more Read all reviews
