What to Know

Critics Consensus

Masterfully using negative space and unsettling audio to build its creeping dread, undertone erupts as a diabolically immersive aural nightmare.

Audience Says

Despite an original premise and an effective unsettling atmosphere undertone delivers a somewhat muted horror experience that may appeal to fans of slow-burn, moody fare.

As Undertone crescendoed through its final act, I found myself pleading for Evy to thrust off her headphones. But Tuason’s successfully nerve-racking film relentlessly suffocates within its inescapable, eerie soundscape. Go to Full Review

Tuason conducts "Undertone" to a fever pitch, a maelstrom of sound and fury that is spookily effective, if frustratingly nonspecific. Go to Full Review

If there were such a thing as an aural cleanse, you’d need one when the credits roll. Go to Full Review

It made me feel uncomfortable, but overall, its premise feels wasted on a story and characters that wanted more development and scares that should have played to both your eyes and your ears. Go to Full Review

This terrific Canadian entry is a reminder that horror doesn’t need to be loud to be effective. Go to Full Review

Marcus 1h Just what I wanted from a scary movie! See more Jorge G 2h Movie was okay. Definitely had its suspenseful scenes, but things that should of happened didn't happen. Like, a demon popping out at some point. Then we never saw what the guy on the other side of the phone looked like, only heard his voice the whole time. It's rated as a horror movie, and some reviews stated it was very scary, but in my opinion it wasn't scary at all. See more April 4h This movie SUCKED! It was so damn slow! Nothing really happened till towards the end and I was in and out of consciousness by then! Not worth the money to go see it in theaters! See more Webster P 9h Loved the mood and the slow burn in the plot. However, I didn't understand the overall storyline and it left me confused. Might have to rewatch this before it's gone. See more ELB E @Mulholland 10h I admired the premise of 'Undertone' - present a movie where the scares are all in the sound and not in the visuals. While the sound design is really well done, there's just not a cohesive story going on here. I get the sense that the writer/director ran out of story halfway through the screenplay and resorted to a 'more is more' approach, hoping people wouldn't notice that underneath all the various sounds there was no real story. Now, I don't need things to be tied up into a neat little bow. David Lynch's 'Lost Highway' and 'Mulholland Drive' are two of my favorite films, and there are countless narrative elements that go unanswered. But with each of these films, there seems to be a foundation to the screenplays that supports the filmic discontinuity. With 'Undertone' I was left feeling irritated and annoyed rather than pleasingly spooked. See more christopher 10h Worst horror movie of life See more Read all reviews
