Critics Consensus

The Innocents chillingly subverts the purity of youth in a powerfully acted thriller that lingers long after the credits roll.

Vogt brings out the ugliness of childhood... and ramps it up with endless malice that slowly builds to horrific action. Go to Full Review

Sophistication. Depth. And an appreciation for old-fashioned emotion and unexpected heroism. It’s hard to frame The Innocents as a feel-good movie, but there’s much in it that’s ennobling as well as disturbing, and satisfyingly weird. Go to Full Review

For all its flaws, The Innocents still manages to be an intriguing and daring psychological horror, based around one very unnerving child indeed. Go to Full Review

The young actors portraying these kids all deliver unexpectedly extraordinary performances. The group epitomizes a generation growing up utterly detached and subdivided. Go to Full Review

The second film by Norwegian director Eskil Vogt belongs to a fruitful narrative tradition of children capable of doing evil, even without being fully aware of it. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Ernest 05/23/2022 I had no idea that it was a foreign film with subtitles. After a few minutes I got used to reading the dialog. The Horror genre of the fim sneaks up onyou, well done. See more Logan D Dec 7 Several children gain psychic powers and we all know what Uncle Ben said about power. A slow-burn horror featuring children of various moral leanings being challenged by the abilities they all begin to display. There is no explanation as to why they possess these powers (maybe they are mutants? Contact Prof X!). I was reminded of Village of the Damned in which children are also affected by supernatural powers. Here, though, instead of the children being in conflict with adults the discord is between the children themselves. The adults are NPCs in this tale. One issue I had with the film was the length. At times the quiet tension is too quiet and I wished the film would move faster. Still, I enjoyed this portrayal of moral corrosion and abuse. Recommended See more Lovell T @Lovell Dec 1 The personification of evil in the young and innocent. Here evil is portrayed as mere direct sentiments, eliminating others or the unwanted out of fun, spite or defence, without the complexity or afterthought of older individuals and adults. Visually striking with restrained but impactful CGI, and incredible performance from the young actors, this is one of the best genre-bending horror films. See more Jim P Nov 22 Norway does the supernatural very well. Bra! See more Nov 5 It's a slow burner with almost no action, no screamers, but also no facepalm moments, no clichéd dialogue, and plot twists that aren't the most obvious. The actors are all unknown, and the faces and sets are fresh. Well, yes, this is a story about the paradox of childhood cruelty, and the main villain plays the role of a classic psychopath. Psychopaths are often born, in case you didn't know. It's simply because of the peculiarities of children's psychology that they're rarely diagnosed with this. Many children behave strangely and can be cruel even without psychopathic tendencies. This film isn't the most vivid or profound, but it's still an entertaining insight into the world of children, where things aren't as rosy as they're commonly believed. See more Elmer J Oct 27 The Innocents is provocative and quietly disturbing. Though slow-paced, it builds a chilling atmosphere that lingers. The child actors deliver powerful performances, but the lack of backstory on their powers leaves some narrative gaps that could have added depth to the story. The haunting score captures the film’s sense of unease and quiet despair. See more Read all reviews
