spencer p Funny for some to watch, embarrassing for others, but all around enlightening about the kinds of people out there who are so dedicated to their passion, they're blind to their personal faults. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Anyone seen this doc ? This is the kind of thing that makes me think Im living in Bizarro World. The filmmakers, including Jared Hess and Jack Black, attempt to make this guy appear to be some kind of quirky eccentric but in reality he is an abusive, selfish, entitled, no-talent hack with massive delusions of grandeur. It was actually infuriating watching the way this jerk treats people and Jared Hess (who sadly has ended up being a hack himself - God knows how he made the brilliant Napolean Dynamite) pandering to him because he finds him amusing in the way we may find a belligerent 5 year old. This douchebag abuses the kindness and love of his wife and everyone around him. I hope he dies a horrible death. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member I want to break this review into two parts. The first, the actual documentary storytelling and the second, the story itself. From a documentary perspective: The way the story is framed from within one of Groo's own acting tutorial films is genius. The animation gave a much-needed lightheartedness to the film and the music was a nice whimsical touch. Overall the execution of the film was awesome. The Story: The title "Insufferable Groo" should give you a sense of what is to come, but Groo is truly a frustrating person. On one hand, you see a DIY filmmaker that has a true passion for movies, and on the other a man who is so flawed that he really gets what he deserves. It's tough to not watch the film and feel that even if he made simple changes to his approach he would see some commercial success. Mostly my heart ached for his family. A loving wife and family who are forced to live a pretty tough existence because Groo cannot play nice with others. I wanted to root for a guy who has so much passion but at the same time wanted to take him by the shoulders and shake him to his senses. Overall a great film and an amazing project, but go into it knowing that you will feel frustrated and a little angry in the end. John DeFore Hollywood Reporter May leave many viewers wishing Groo would pawn his camera and let someone boss him around for a change. Feb 28, 2019 Full Review Lorry Kikta Film Threat If anything, The Insufferable Groo will make you reconsider your commitment to whatever your passions are. Rated: 7/10 Dec 12, 2018 Full Review Adam Patterson Film Pulse Groo's dedication to filmmaking is admirable, and Christopherson presents that in a well-crafted documentary that's an easily recommended watch. Rated: 7/10 Nov 25, 2018 Full Review Musanna Ahmed Film Inquiry An endearing and often funny profile of an amateur filmmaker who's equally as inspiring as he is narcissistic. Aug 1, 2018 Full Review Allan Hunter Screen International The result is entertaining and intriguing up to a point but, like Groo's films, a little of it goes a long way.
