Dave Skylark (James Franco) and his producer Aaron Rapoport (Seth Rogen) are the team behind the popular tabloid-TV show "Skylark Tonight." After learning that North Korea's Kim Jong Un (Randall Park) is a huge fan of the show, they successfully set up an interview with him, hoping to legitimize themselves as actual journalists. However, as Dave and Aaron prepare for their journey to Pyongyang, the CIA steps in, recruits them, and assigns them an incredible mission: Assassinate the dictator.

Critics Consensus

Unfortunately overshadowed by controversy (and under-screened as a result), The Interview's screenplay offers middling laughs bolstered by its two likable leads.

Emily St. James Vox Even the film's most ardent champions would likely concede that The Interview is a spectacularly weird film to end up at the center of a free speech brouhaha. Sep 26, 2016 Full Review Jason Bailey Flavorwire It's funny and strange, with an admirably gonzo sensibility, and it approaches the job of mocking Kim with the appropriate degree of joy-buzzer delight. Jun 7, 2016 Full Review Scott Marks San Diego Reader The suffocating level of redundancy on display kneecaps any legitimate chance the film had at embracing social satire. Rated: 1/4 Aug 20, 2015 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review A funny, silly, stupid comedy that will make some people laugh, others not so much. Any response beyond that is an overreaction. Rated: 3/4 Jul 13, 2022 Full Review Q.V. Hough Vague Visages The Interview will impress many when the mood turns serious, but these faux-moments of shrewdness come only after the non-stop, over-the-top antics from James Franco. Jun 27, 2022 Full Review James Croot The Post NZ If you want a real envelope-pushing, controversial, yet uproariously funny movie in your life right now, then go seek out (or revisit) the truly anarchic Team America: World Police. Owen T This movie is hilarious and very underrated, everybody complains about controversy but who actually cares about controversy. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/23/25 Full Review Audience Member I think this movie is a great example of the sheer hypocrisy that is plagueing our western society. Deep fake videos are punishable by law, and as we hopefully know: laws are _absolute_, so they provide rules and protection for everyone. And then you get this mess... making a movie that shows the murder of a real person, without their consent, and then actually thinking there's nothing wrong with it? What the hell is wrong with you?!! I wonder what would have happened if a (Bollywood?) studio would have made a movie about the murder of Barack Obama, including specific footage that would make it look as if it really happened... something tells me the US would be in a major uproar about something so distastefull and horrific. This is just garbage, and in my opinion North Korea had every right to be upset about it. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/22/25 Full Review Justin S one of the most best movies ever made and whoever says its ass is a ho Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/27/25 Full Review Paul L baby you're a firework Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/31/25 Full Review Nate D I’m only rating this movie a decade after it came out (and having watched it several times) because I went on Peacock to watch it and they showed it has ratings of 48% and 51%. That’s just wrong. For some reason a lot of reviews, including the “critic consensus” (as if movie critics ever get good/bad movies right), mention the North Korea Sony hack and subsequent controversy as if that has anything to do with the quality of the movie. This thing is just fun, pure and simple. Yes it’s stupid, yes it’s absurd, but this is ridiculously fun watch. I saw it when it came out in theaters and I’ve watched it with friends several times since then, and every time it is just cracking up with the boys nonstop. It’s not groundbreaking and it doesn’t belong in the Library of Congress but it delivers exactly what it promises. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/25/25 Full Review Rosana B Um péssimo filme de comédia de ação e sátira política norte-americana.... Fraco...
