Theodore Strauss New York Times But it is Mr. Barrymore who so scandalously accents a preposterous affair that it becomes amusing as a lampoon on itself. Feb 25, 2020 Full Review Variety Staff Variety Barrymore grooves .as the eccentric inventor most effectively, playing the character more or less straight, with only a slight touch of farcical treatment. Feb 25, 2020 Full Review SMH Staff Sydney Morning Herald In John Barrymore's hands this Professor Gibbs becomes a gay caricature of an aged and cranky but clever scientist. Feb 25, 2020 Full Review Tim Brayton Antagony & Ecstasy Nobody involved needed to feel the least bit ashamed of the results, and for a romcom spun-off from a horror franchise, that's as good as we can fairly expect. Blu B It's interesting how this predates Nightmare on Elm Street in terms of being one of the first horror franchises to shift more and more into comedy. I did wonder if watching the second one if it would've been even better without the comedy and this kind of confirms my suspision it would. The humor is TERRIBLE the longer it goes. It's super stupid and dumb slapstick type stuff nonsense. At first I thought it was harmless PG humor that falls flat but my god the longer it goes the more stupid and just bad it gets. The editing isn't good, the pacing is terrible, this feels way longer than 72 minutes. The acting isn't good and everything else is passable at best. The special effects aren't bad but they are used in such dumb ways. The plot moves way too fast, hardly has any character development besides maybe 15-30 seconds for each person, and it just feels like the more it goes the more ridiculous and stupid it gets. It becomes like some sort of crime plot and forgets about the invisible woman thing to become a romcom type of deal. It honestly starts to implod and pancake on itself drastically in the final 30 minutes or so. It starts jumping around and almst becomes borderline incoherent on top of being terribly unfunny. It's such a dumb plot and a terrible idea to take this into such hardcore screwball slapstick comedy. It's kind of insane how much stupidity this fits in a mere 72 minutes. It starts alright enough but you can feel its way too fast and it just becmes a big problem the more it goes throwing nonsense at you, never developing any real character, never giving any laughs which one could argue is the ultimate sin here, and just becomoing so off the rails by the end. You'd never know watching this on its own this was a respected horror franchise. Skip this. Worst of the trilogy by a mile. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/22/25 Full Review Julian S THE INVISIBLE WOMAN swaps the unsettling tone of her male predecessor for a playful, whimsical approach that keeps you entertained purely for the fun of it. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/28/25 Full Review Jay W I can't help but poke fun at the gender issues on display in the movie. The first two entries are about a man turning invisible, going mad, and then becoming a murderer. I can imagine the producers asking themselves, "What adventures will the invisible woman get into?" "Well since it is a woman, clearly she can't be a crazy killer. So, this film is going to be a romantic comedy. She will be a fashion model, and when she goes invisible, she is concerned with how messed up her hair is." So yes, although the last two invisible movies were horrors, this one is a romantic comedy. I give credit to Universal's "invisible person" franchise, because each entry is distinct from the previous. All that being said, there are some very funny bits in this movie. There are some painfully dumb moments, but still some legitimate laughs, and not just at the movie's expense. The movie has a fair amount of slapstick but does not use Shemp to his full potential. Thus far, this is also the most technically sound of the franchise. The invisible effects in this movie are top notch. Missed opportunity, the tagline of this movie really should have been..."it was love before first sight". The ending is weird and doesn’t land for me but it suits the movie I guess.
