Critics Consensus

Its blend of documentary and drama is admittedly occasionally uneven, but The Invisibles offers an absorbing glimpse into a less-explored corner of WWII history.

Christy Lemire FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) It always feels a little awkward and a little jumpy, but the stories themselves are fascinating. Sep 17, 2019 Full Review Brad Wheeler Globe and Mail The Invisibles, about humans as living ghosts, needs to be seen, and believed. Rated: 3/4 Apr 4, 2019 Full Review Ty Burr Boston Globe "The Invisibles" favors quantity of remembrance over quality of any one experience. It's worth attending to, obviously, even if the movie somehow manages to do less with more. Rated: 2.5/4 Feb 20, 2019 Full Review Pat Mullen POV Magazine Even though the outcome for the four survivors is evident in their presence as elderly interviewees, the narrative threads remain consistently compelling as we watch the characters drift imperceptibly throughout the city. May 22, 2019 Full Review Chris Knight National Post [W]hile the back-and-forth structure hurts the storytelling, the tale itself remains one of vital importance. Rated: 3.5/5 Apr 8, 2019 Full Review Anne Brodie What She Said The story's interesting enough given the scenes on-set of the making of Cabaret, but the eventual untangling and healing of their relationship, the rarified air of elite Broadway, and stellar performances by Rockwell and Williams make it sing. Audience Member This docudrama tells the harrowing story of 4 German Jews who made the decision to hide from the Nazis in Berlin rather than face deportation to the camps. It also brings to light the brave Germans who risked their lives on a daily basis to help many survive. Of the 7,000 German Jews in Berlin who made this decision only 1500 survived. Highly engrossing movie. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Wonderfully acted. Engrossing story plot. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/23/19 Full Review Audience Member WONDERFUL AND POIGNANT... Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Phenomenally riveting. Pivotal time in history, detailed exposition of personal lives, and top top level acting. I think some of the reviewers were thrown by the amalgam of documentary (four elderly survivors telling their stories on camera with emotion and the perspective of distance) and novelistic features (those survivors' stories enacted in gripping detail). The impact is powerful, not depressing. The survivors' stories are amazing, and their determination and drive to conquer their oppression is inspiring and life-sustaining. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Had potential. I liked the docudrama approach. The scenes of vintage footage felt so misplaced. They were not tied to anything and the footage was pretty basic. They did not spend a lot of time focusing on the characters. Some more so than others. The interviews with the real people looked like it was filmed years ago. Could have been really good if it was just a movie based on their lives. It never quite worked as a movie or a documentary. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member Stories as gripping as those presented in THE INVISIBLES are frequently engrossing and fascinating. Unfortunately I was pulled out of the story presented by the brilliant reenactments for straightforward and uninspired talking-head segments. I quite enjoyed the recreated segments and highly value the interviews, but they're not of similar caliber or very well woven together. This film felt much longer than its 1:50 running time.
