What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Journey's narrative deficiencies undermine a powerful fact-based story, but those problems are often offset by solid work from Colm Meaney and Timothy Spall.

David Stratton The Australian It's gripping and amusing, and it contains one of John Hurt's last screen appearances. Nov 30, 2018 Full Review David Sexton London Evening Standard One of the great political transitions has been re-imagined as a concise road trip in a pastiche of the sort of political play Peter Morgan might have written as a two-hander for the smaller stage. As a film, it doesn't open out. Rated: 2/5 Sep 1, 2017 Full Review Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com The Journey does not claim to be historical fact, but that doesn't make the creatively intelligent fiction it muses on any less fascinating. Rated: 3/4 Jul 14, 2017 Full Review Leigh Monson Substream Magazine The Journey does little to elevate its limited premise... Rated: 2/5 Sep 25, 2020 Full Review Steven Prokopy Third Coast Review I suspect that even if the negotiations that brought about that peace were as dry as a bone and completely lacking any form of drama, it still would have been more interesting than this weirdly paced, strangely toned alternative history. May 11, 2020 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com The jaunty, estranged tone doesn't carry the level of importance as it should, instead playing like some banal, tangential escapade. Simon T Flawed and often tendentious, but redeemed by fine performances from Tim Spall and Colm Meaney, this well-intentioned fictionalisation of the conversation - or rather, lack of it - between two diametrically opposed figureheads from the unionist and nationalist wings of Northern Ireland, Ian Paisley and Martin McGuinness, follows them on the long drive to Edinburgh Airport as they bicker and seethe. There's a good Tony Blair from Toby Stephens, a strangely underused John Hurt as the MI5 head, and a surfeit of very bad wigs. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/02/23 Full Review Audience Member Good sense of the dialogs and the timing about a historical moment. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member As stated by others, this is a movie for all. Ubiquitous enjoyment. The first scene pulls one in and never lets go. There is an element of Harold Pinter: much communication is done under the silence. The screenplay, lush cinematography and musical score creates the perfect canvas for stellar actors to exceed in their gifts. Unpredictable, and pleasing: this is a gem of artwork. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/20/19 Full Review zed b Great performances by Spall and Meaney give life to this critical moment in Irish History and provide both an incite into Ulster's divided communities and the price that has been paid for it. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member El viaje (The Journey) [2017] Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Excellent movie!
