The Kid

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Well-framed, well-cast, and well-intentioned, The Kid still largely fails to set itself apart from the multitude of other westerns covering similar territory.

Tim Cogshell FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) This has far, far too many soliloquies... The material itself isn't worthy of it. Sep 20, 2019 Full Review Richard Roeper Chicago Sun-Times First-time director D'Onofrio has as an admirable visual style, whether we get medium-long-shot takes or intimate close-ups. This is a good-looking period piece film, percolating with top-tier performances. Rated: 3/4 Mar 8, 2019 Full Review Bilge Ebiri New York Magazine/Vulture It succeeds sporadically as a corrective anti-myth, but as a story about people, it fails to come to life. Mar 8, 2019 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies “The Kid” is a fresh venture across some well-traveled cinematic territory. Rated: 4/5 Aug 22, 2022 Full Review M.N. Miller Ready Steady Cut The fault in the film is the script by Andrew Lanham, whose third act plot is paper-thin from the beginning and at times is contrived. Rated: 2.5/5 Aug 18, 2022 Full Review Emma Simmonds Radio Times The film's honeyed cinematography and gruff stylings mean it often looks the part, but it moves too hurriedly, failing to conjure the atmosphere or majesty of the best of the genre. Chris B Great cast typical story. Thus the bad reviews. I liked it kept things interesting and involved in the story. This one is worth it. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/27/24 Full Review Mark B Highly underrated! Western's are not as popular as they once were. I understand. But, this is very effective movie. While keeping with familiar themes and characters it's very entertaining and enjoyable. Especially for those that enjoy westerns. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member another great western to add to your collection Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/25/22 Full Review jelisije j A decent western flick that would've been better if they didn't use historical figures and use fictional characters instead. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review christopher c. m They end up held up with Billy The Kid who is holding out against Pat Garrett. Ignoring two major facts that Garrett was a federal marshal not a sheriff, ergo able to cross state lines. And the mounting evidence that Billy the Kid really lived to a ripe old age. That Sara thinks they'd hang for killing their father stepfather. Which they wouldn't, even in the old west self defense was a good defense. Maybe it's Sara's fault being stupid and not a thing this movie would say will happen. But that ignorance is puts the rest of the plot in motion. Lastly, this is why I hate most modern westerns. They're bleak, boring and dill with no likable characters. And makes me wonder why so many love this boring backward time. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/02/24 Full Review Boneyard L This is a solid modern western that has a lot going for it. In some ways it's a mashup of other westerns, but with its own fresh shootouts and getaways. Chris Pratt has an excellent turn as a bone-chilling villain, and Dane DeHaan is clearly having a lot of fun as Billy the Kid. The plot rambles a bit too much and at least one key moment is unearned, with muddled motivation. Sill, this film is definitely worth a watch for fans of Westerns, but it's not going to bring anyone to the genre. Content warning: rape Closet comparison: It's like The Night of the Hunter by way of 3:10 to Yuma.
