Highly underrated! Western's are not as popular as they once were. I understand. But, this is very effective movie. While keeping with familiar themes and characters it's very entertaining and enjoyable. Especially for those that enjoy westerns.

They end up held up with Billy The Kid who is holding out against Pat Garrett. Ignoring two major facts that Garrett was a federal marshal not a sheriff, ergo able to cross state lines. And the mounting evidence that Billy the Kid really lived to a ripe old age. That Sara thinks they'd hang for killing their father stepfather. Which they wouldn't, even in the old west self defense was a good defense. Maybe it's Sara's fault being stupid and not a thing this movie would say will happen. But that ignorance is puts the rest of the plot in motion. Lastly, this is why I hate most modern westerns. They're bleak, boring and dill with no likable characters. And makes me wonder why so many love this boring backward time.

This is a solid modern western that has a lot going for it. In some ways it's a mashup of other westerns, but with its own fresh shootouts and getaways. Chris Pratt has an excellent turn as a bone-chilling villain, and Dane DeHaan is clearly having a lot of fun as Billy the Kid. The plot rambles a bit too much and at least one key moment is unearned, with muddled motivation. Sill, this film is definitely worth a watch for fans of Westerns, but it's not going to bring anyone to the genre. Content warning: rape Closet comparison: It's like The Night of the Hunter by way of 3:10 to Yuma. Setting: Western Plot: On the Run Tone: Thriller
